Colossus' scream from X-men arcade. I remember it fondly. That 'WRAAAAAARRR!!!' sound from the arcade at the mall would instantly draw me in with a pocket full of quarters.
Some of the screams in The Witcher 3 are the exact same ones that are used in Carmageddon 2 and Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. I instantly recognized the sounds when I heard them, as I played those games a lot back in the days :)
The screams of Revenants in Doom.
Just the beginning SFX.

When you triggered an alarm/ camera/ guard etc. in Metal Gear Solid.
The same for Splinter Cell.
The splatter sound effects in Carmageddon.
The arrows in Age of Empires II (and everything else too!)
The sound of the floppy disk, when you pushed it all the way into the drive and when you eject it. :-)
Age of Empires: when you hear the wololo and you know it is not coming from your troops, your stress level will raise 1000%.

I like this poem a lot:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Wololo
Now roses are too
Nothing is sweeter than the cha-ching sound in Transport Tycoon. It's such a happy sound.

Doom - when a large door opens.

I found it here:

Scroll down to Environment section

I just thought of another one, with the Postal expansion, when you are in the shopping mall:

"What!? You don't sell 'Postal'!?"

Funny I immediately thought of two from Daggerfall when I saw this thread, one of which I'm pretty sure is a "stock" sound that I've heard numerous times since...

The squeak of the imps / bats
The creak of the doors opening

The Diablo "town" music is sure up there as well - good call OP!

And maybe the sliding of the UFO doors in XCOM.
A top10 is impossible, and many classics have their famous ones.
Among all, however, I probably recall better those Diablo sounds too. They were so unique : )
Good grief.. didn't expect quite so many replies in such a short time!

I think a "Top Ten Iconic Game Sounds" might have to hit YouTube complete with clips. See what I can do..

By the way, lads - you're all SO showing your ages ;)

But then, This Is GOG. Don't we love it?

Keep 'em coming..

PS - Pacman's wack wacka.. I think we'll all agree that's definitely up there above Diablo, if only because "It's History, man!"

(I just thought of another.. the appearance of a flying saucer in the Space Invaders arcade version. Damn but that used to shrink my teenage gonads)

Oh yes, those you'll hear so many times when playing the game that the sounds will be ingrained into your mind forever.
The city guard's "HALT! HALT!" is still a running joke between one of my friends and myself, and pretty much anyone who ever played the game.

LOL I had forgotten about this one! It ended up being pretty funny whenever I'd try to run away and have what felt like a dozen of them chasing me around all saying "HALT! HALT!" over and over and over again, all stacked on top of each other.
