A stray memory popped into my frontal lobe yesterday - the memory of a sound. A particular sound which I hadn't heard in far too long.
So the same evening, I found myself blowing the dust off the cover of my 1996 copy of Diablo, and loading up for a trip down Memory Lane.

Diablo was one of the first full-price major league games I bought, and I was entranced from the opening scene at the village, with that easy-going melodic guitar riff that I always left on.

But that wasn't the sound I was listening for.

It came much, much later - about three-and-a-half hours into play, three dungeons down, when I was beginning to despair it would ever grace my headphones...

But of course, it finally did. I dispatched with the gold-lettered unique Fallen monster aptly named "Gutshank the Quick", and as his bloody torso sank to the floor a tiny group of pixels flipped into the air, and hit the floor with a soft "pinggg!"

MY PRECIOUS!!

In the two decades since, I've never tired of that sound across all three iterations of the game. I've had LAN parties at home where that sound has almost ended in fisticuffs, as some insolent thief has grabbed someone else's rightful finger jewellery. That simple sound is enough to send even the hardest gamer into paroxysms of delighted greed and hope.

So - what would be your suggestions for a Top Ten list?

Simple rules:
Must be from a game published on the PC
Just a sound effect - not a music clip or narrative
Unfortunately I can't find a sample of it, but can we all agree the original death shriek from 'Abuse' is iconic! XD

Great thread Coolmoke; brilliant idea. :D
Thunderous roar! Okay, this may be taken from one of the movies, but it's very much a common presence in LA's space operas. It certainly gets the adrenaline pumping during dogfights. Iconic, indeed! :)
Definitely the sound in Doom 2, when those cubes fly through the forehead of the final boss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh9nzvgJYFo . I hear this sound quite often, mostly in cheap movies, when some kind portal opens or other mystical things happen.

Can't get much more iconic than the serious of kill multiplier sound effects from Unreal Tournament...

M-m-m-m-monster kill!

Oh the first thing that comes to mind is the mage from Warcraft 2 and his fireball attack:
in a deep menacing voice :
"Yes?"
"As you wish..."
"BOOUg'hHG DOOGHG DOUGGHH BEOUGGHGHHGH BEEOGHGHGHH"

I'll quickly see if I can find a clip of that

edit : 2 mages casting the fireball spell https://youtu.be/3DHNcj010bA?t=1296

Also I found this treasure trove: http://www.thanatosrealms.com/war2/alliance-sounds
which for some reason doesn't include the fireball sound effect

Speaking of Diablo, I still remember Gharbad the Weak: "Please, no kill Gharbad. Live, live and good will bring to you!" And he said this in a way like a goat was trying to speak, very funny. :-)
Climbing up ladders in Half-Life
Super Mario Coins
Plasma Cannons in Master of Orion 2.

Coolsmoke: ...
I´ve heard the sound that the aliens do on "X-COM: UFO Defense" when they scream, used in movies and even tv shows...............probably even the same wav. :P

Nice find!
God those bring back memories...
I really wish Blizzard would release their stuff here...

I also love the taunts from Age of Kings and Red Alert 2 (can't find a working soundboard for those, they all seem dodgy.. :( )
Everything from the first Doom .
