StingingVelvet: Hyperbolic drama queen thread title and OP aside, it is pretty infuriating when Steam versions get patches and fixes that GOG does not. KotOR 2 is a great example, a game I own on GOG but recently replayed on Steam because of a patch GOG never got which improves modern Windows compatibility and adds widescreen support.

Not sure whether that applies to Gothic 1 and 2 or not as the OP says, but either way it should never happen. Ever.
Problem with your post is the fact its oxymoronic in its entirety, contradicts itself perfectly:

Calling the title and the OP "hyperbolic drama queen", is a drama queen attitude in and by itself, even more "hyperbolic" than the OP btw.
Not to mention you follow by complaining about the same thing as the OP.

Beautiful logic and beautiful attitude.

tfishell: Actually they rebranded like 8 years ago, they aren't called Good Old Games anymore!

fronzelneekburm: ...
Their old moniker sticks, whether they like it or not.
I kinda agree. :p

----

As far as some games not working, that's just PC gaming in general; for newer games devs and pubs prioritize GOG less/are slower to upload compared to Steam; and I think GOG keeps plenty busy so they can't be testing hundreds of games every day.

I'd love to see whatever else can be automated be automated; we need robot game testers who can work throughout the night and weekends. :P

Lifthrasil: Grumpy Old Gamers!
^This.

Otherwise they would have to re-label to GOVAAQ (Games Of Varying Age And Quality).
avatar
Lifthrasil: No. But unofficially it doesn't refer to the games anymore, but to us: Grumpy Old Gamers!
They totally should have rebranded to this acronym instead. It's got pizzazz!
Howsabout "Gamers Owning Games"? :P

Good Ownable Games?
So the GOG vs. Good Old Games discussion keeps going into 2020. Some things never change, do they?

kaboro: GOG does not deserve its name. (snipped)
Most games are tested on basic versions of the major supported OSs...that's about it....this ensures MOST can play those games on such with little to no effort, but it does not guarantee them to run on every instance of said OSs run by everyone(as everyone tweaks their OS a bit differently/etc).

Also if I may ask: You complain and write such a misleading thread title yet have over 850 games on GOG....why is that?

Tell that to the devs and rights holders....GOG cannot patch with anything besides official patches in most cases, and if they don't give GOG anything they have nothing to patch with.

Also GOG has applied some unofficial patches with ip holder blessing, but usually only for game breaking/OS incompatibility bugs/etc.

At this point you two need to "get a room" and hash this out. o.0 :D

Dark_art_: How would you feel if the FCKing Operating System most people use (to play steam games) breaks compatibility of your stuff every 6 months?

I see many old games being updated, sometimes creating other bugs in the process.

Microsoft is not making things any easier.
To be fair one can(with some tweaks of course and some work as well) block updates for a very long time...not forever, though, but longer than 6 months.....more than enough time for some people to test said OS updates first and for one to ask them about such/etc.

(Also it's better imo for game makers/sites to have to deal with one regularly updated base OS than a bunch of differing ones[though I could be a bit wrong on this])

Back in the day i started buying games on GoG (and steam) despite the fact i already owned the boxed versions of many of them.
The reason was i hoped that on GoG and Steam, these games will be kept alive, that is, they will be kept functional on newer systems.
Looks like i was wrong, Steam and GoG wont go out of their way to do anything whatsoever, instead they will content themselves to apply fan-developed patches if and when these fan patches exist.
So these store-fronts make money selling these games, but its up to the technically inclined players to fix them and keep them alive.

Also you seem intrigued by the fact i complain and write a "misleading" thread while supporting GOG.
Personally i see no contradiction here, the fact i support GOG does not mean i have to agree with everything they do, and i have the right to complain when something bothers me.
Dont consider my post was misleading, at least not any more misleading than GoG deciding they were not called "good old games" anymore but keeping the acronym AND not telling what the acronym was standing for....unless it was not meant to be an acronym anymore but just a name....in this case with a surely unintended biblical resonance to it :P

I have a lot of old games on GOG. The vast majority works fine without any further tweaking on my "newer system". Are you calling me a liar? What's wrong with you?

Good old games?
You mean good old games that dont work on newer systems and nothing is done to correct the reported issues?
Whats the point?
Gothic 1 and 2 dont work, the few stupidiotic solutions presented in the sh*tty support dont work.
Forum requests for help are ignored.
In the meantime, there are patches for the Steam versions that work.

So here is an example of good old games that work on Steam but not on GOG.

Would expect a store that calls itself Good Old Games, to take some extra steps to make sure these good old games work and keep working on newer systems, but nope, thats definitely not the case, and given the much larger popularity of Steam, you are much more likely to get these games going on Steam than on GoG.
It's the exact opposite for me. Games from yesteryear run silky smooth, as opposed to old games on Steam. I stopped buying old games on Steam for a while now, because when I try to play them they operate like ass.
