Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Lone3wolf: Sorry to report the following:

Selected "Temple of Elemental Evil" for installation.
Received a half-dozen of the attached pics.

skeletonbow: It's a pretty safe bet that anything downloaded from GOG.com is not infected with any virus or trojan, and that if the executable or other files are in fact infected that they weren't downloaded infected from GOG but became infected on the system they're being detected as infected on. So the most likely scenario is that either your virus scanner is triggering a false positive, or your system is infected and has infected other executables that are on the system including things downloaded from GOG.com. Virus scanners are notoriously terrible with this especially for executables they have no record of to start with. I've even seen them trigger false positives on common software like Google Chrome or similar. The free scanners seem to be the worst at it too.
Yeah, I'm not worried. This is a totally new install of the OS and as such it's not been used for much of anything.
I would guess a false-positive, also. First time this has happened in a couple years, too.

mcgeehe: Does anyone know if the Witcher 2 achievements are working yet? They are showing up in the Galaxy client but I haven't gotten around to downloading Witcher 2 again after the last Galaxy update wiped all my game installs.
Not yet, we need to upload the new build of the game that includes Galaxy achievements - for now it is being tested by our QA I do believe.

But The Witcher 3 achievements will work right out of the box :)

Try downloading standalone installer and see if you will get the same effect - very likely you will (and yes, it's a false positive). If the warning appears only when installing via Galaxy, please do let us know via mantis. It is still a false-positive, but maybe something with the installation process within the Client is causing that...

The Witcher 2 (AU) doesn't allow you to install and doesn't pick up an already installed version.

Navagon: Overall this is brilliant. For me at least it has worked without a hitch so there are no bugs for me to report right now. I'll post some suggestions though.

Suggestions

Note: the below suggestions are made fully in the knowledge that this isn't complete and you may already intend to add some of this stuff anyway. Some of it is picky and probably not relevant to the more immediately pressing concerns.

- Add possibility of either downloading installers as per the Downloader, or backing up games into compressed files. That would help make the client more complete. Otherwise the best option is to download the installer, install, then associate the installation with Galaxy. Which is needlessly fiddly.
You can already do this. Just either go to the game's page via your libary and click on it or if you already have the game installed just click it on the side bar. There next to the Install/play button there is a button marked More there just select extras and you will see the Installer

Example: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g169/Evilmonkey6669/install.png
Just to be clear, can we make suggestions to http://mantis.gog.com or would you prefer that stays strictly for bugs right now?

coreyblueexclusive: Galaxy need's a pause button for downloads, and I can't wait for the achievements and everything to be added.

I haven't ran into a bug yet :) good work dev's.
avatar
DCT: the blues already said that they will be putting in a pause button. Can't recall if they said next update or later then that.
Aha that's good to know,I mean of course they would add a pause button eventually, but it's good to be sure :)
A pause download button really is needed, yeah.
Not really a bug, but neither X-Wing nor TIE Fighter have icons in either my library or the sidebar for my installed games.
It seems like Galaxy currently does not check whether there's enough disk space available before installing a game. I just had a corrupted and unfinished installation because of this. Also, when downloading extras, Galaxy does not check whether some of the files you're trying to download are maybe already present in the download location, and just re-downloads everything.

The GOG Downloader has both of these features (checked available disk space and whether the files are already there), so I'm wondering if I'm encountering bugs, or if these features have yet to be added.

It's been reported a few times that I've seen. It's on the mantis report link in OP, anyway.

Standalone re-downloaded and used to install to separate location from Client installs.
No warnings about viruses appeared.
Reporting to Mantis now.

The download size check should be working, we'll look into it.

It is a bug, whether it is the client itself or something else isn't clear though. I have TIE Fighter 1994 game card showing in the Galaxy library view, but the other 2 TIE Fighter games and all 3 X-Wing games have no graphic showing so I can confirm this as well.

Confirmed here also, as well as The Witcher 1 too.

I dunno if this sort of situation has been discussed here previously or not but I thought I'd bring it up so that GOG can ponder how to handle it in the future. I had a friend come over to visit a week or so ago who is also a GOG customer. He logged into his GOG account via web browser from my computer and manually downloaded one of his games to install and play while I was making dinner, and to demo it for me. He left the game installed on my computer when he left and it is just sitting there now, however when I run the GOG Galaxy account logged into my own account, it has detected that this other game is installed on my computer and makes it show up in my own installed games list with a Play icon, which I presume is for convenience or something, but it is smart enough to know that I do not own this game in my account as it displays another icon to "Connect" the game to GOG Galaxy.

I have intentionally just left it sit there and done nothing as I do not wish to connect it to Galaxy because it does not belong to me yet (although it is in my wishlist to pick up in the future). For the time being I'm going to leave the game as is in case there are any tests or whatnot that GOG would like me to perform or file bug reports etc.

I suppose this sort of thing is likely to come up more and more over time as multiple people may all live in the same house and share a single computer - each having their own GOG.com account and a single computer may end up having games from multiple people all installed on the system at once. Since GOG doesn't bundle or put any user or account identifying information on the games it is presumably at least a little difficult to determine which account a given game belongs to I suppose.

Another option would be to detect such games and optionally put an icon somewhere to let the user know they can purchase the game by clicking [here], and/or whether it is on sale at the moment or something.

Anyhow, I wanted to throw the information out there for GOG to ponder various scenarios where this sort of thing might happen, and consider options for how best to handle it. Some people might want to have an option "do not show games installed on this system that do not belong to this account in the Galaxy views" or an option "show other people's installed games grouped together in another section" or something like that.

Let me know if there's any logs/info I can provide that could be of assistance while this game is still installed. I'd like to uninstall it before long though as I need the space for test-installing other games although there's no big rush either.
