sunshinecorp: A simple solution would be to run to a place where people don't get offended by the use of the wrong personal pronoun.

Really, I think by now I might sound a bit trolling, but I'm not. I just don't get why things like these would matter in a forum, unless of course the whole conversation was so gender-specific that someone has to assert their gender to make a point. Discuss.

Wurzelkraft: Most times I try to not use a personal pronoun. Not because I'm afraid to offend someone but I simply don't know the gender. The username is a good substitute when in doubt. "Sure, I saw sunshinecorp's post...yadayadayada"
Works for me.
This is the simplest solution and does not call for any pronoun substitution or unnecessary word creation. :)
So awkward every time a he/she moment rolls around. It really would be useful if there was a good neutral pronoun for referring to people. "It" is so it's own thing that it just doesn't work, even if you could get past the whole being wildly insulting thing.

I think "bitch" has become pretty neutral over time, and perhaps "dude".
I'm just going to refer to everyone as "hungarian" until they correct me.

Dzsono: There are many conflicts in forums that could easily be avoided but for the medium itself. Bereft of non-verbal cues, it's hard to tell if someone is joking, sarcastic, sad, happy, serious or surprised.
Isn't it obvious? Some people lack due respect in forums, because being far far away, they lose appreciation for the fact that you are bigger and stronger than them.

In person, they suddenly become quite agreeable :P.

Actually, I much prefer "it". It has a certain feeling of transcendence which I like.

Of thee mortal shell, shake off thy gender coils, these lowly earthly devices to multiply.

When uncertain, say "it" please!

I for one would like to reclaim "bitch" for female dogs.

Cuteness overdose alert!
This. I tend to use "they" even with people whose gender I think I've identified, because I'd rather not even imply offense given in most situations.

Unless they're an asshole. Then I will gleefully offend them.
You know, things were much easier when GOG had its own genders. I miss being a Xippie :(
