I proudly possess one of the best whisk(e)y collections in town, and I have no friends to share with :( It would probably last me a lifetime. My favorite class would probably be American ryes followed by bourbon. Unlike most people I'm not too crazy about peat bomb Islay whiskies (or extremely hopped beer for that matter, moderation is key), but they have their place.

I am slowly putting together a rum collection spanning different styles of the spirit as well, but the number of well-aged quality rums with no sugar/flavoring/crap added is relatively small.

Also recently ventured into some of the higher end XO Cognacs, and some Armagnacs. Good stuff indeed, but difficult to get a hold of in the US except the big 4 mainstream Cognac brands. I'll need to look more into it.

tinyE: How come nobody ever asked me this stuff when I still drank!? :P I was a great alcoholic but no one cared. Now that I finally crawled out of the bottle and dried out, all of a sudden it's a hot topic! XD

Against the common stereotype about Finns, I drink quite rarely, but I don't consider myself as an absolutist either. Maybe it is related to my wife not drinking alcohol at all, and me knowing it pleases her I refrain from it too. I just don't feel the need normally, I guess. i didn't drink that often as a single either, sometimes yes.

The last time was actually a few weeks ago, and oddly, it was my wife who had bought me one beer. I think we were making a special dinner for the New Year and apparently she thought I'd like to have one beer with it. Ok, yeah, if she insists... Before that, I don't think I've drank any alcohol for many months.

Most probably you'd catch me drinking something (beer) when I am in the summer cottage in Midsummer (late June). That's the only exception, it just feels right to open a beer when going to sauna and when barbecuing. I guess I could still survive without it and drink some soda instead...

As for what alcoholic beverage I prefer. beer (lager) is fine. Any lager basically, I don't care. If I have to think of something else, Bailey's tastes nice, but I don't think it has more to do with its sweetness than the alcohol.

I dislike the taste of cognac/brandy (the taste alone makes me want to vomit), while whiskey causes me a splitting headache, even one drink. In some rare cases I might drink red (or white) wine with food, but that is basically only if I am some fancy restaurant, and that doesn't happen often.

That said, I remember enjoying eating chocolate, salmiac and drinking beer, while playing some game. I admit it felt so right, and chocolate and beer go well together, alternating with the smooth sweetness of chocolate and slight bitterness of beer. Yin and yang.

Never attended aa meeting, although I do help people with addiction problems in a group environment. In my experience alcohol becomes a crutch at some point in peoples lives; best example is a tragic event. My sincerest advice is just to be cautious.

You can be happy without alcohol! :)
