I'm on MacOS and I tried everything mentioned in this thread and others as well...

nothing worked.

One thing helped. Just logged out from every other user that is logged in on this machine and it worked then. Probably it was the sum of all the solutions but the last piece was the logged in user in background... this GOG Galaxy is a piece of garbage...
still happening on macbook pro m2 in november 2023.
GOG needs to be more serious.
I feel like the original promise of the website is not kept, and GOG is going downhill.
It was supposed to be DRM free games aka without a launcher.
But if you're going to put a launcher at least make sure it works properly

The solution to this problem is to run their Communication tool manually.

It's incredible that after 6 years, they can't fix this simple problem. This forum thread is 6 years old, 6 pages and 107 posts - I think we've shown enough aggrevation to warrant a fix...

Anyways, the fix to this error is to open a terminal and run the Communication tool manually:

/Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/redists/GalaxyCommunication

The above is for Mac. I assume Windows would be the same once you find the GalaxyCommunication binary.

After that tool is running, then boot the Gog application.

I hope that this saves at least some aggravation for users with this problem.

Yeah, just tried this and it didn't work. Same bloody error! I don't want to uninstall everything and have to download BG3 again for the new update.

Worked for me. Yes, I have been rescued from a month of aggravation. Thanks.

I had this issue manifest on a fresh install of Windows. Had never seen it before. Tried a battery of things including running the GOG service automatically etc. For some reason that service gets closed directly after login while using Remote Desktop. No luck on anything I tried. However, I then physically logged into the computer and it went away. I had been using Remote Desktop from my laptop to setup the workstation's software installs. So, don't use remote desktop until after GOG is loaded (then it is fine). This is repeatable. I doubt this helps very many people since it's such a specific manifestation of the problem. But, perhaps someone out there is dealing with this specific instance. GL
Same issue on a newly setup MacBook M3 Max. Tried reinstalling GOG Galaxy multiple times. Really annoying! I won't use the client again anytime soon
Same here, Macbook Pro M1pro chip. Just came back to GOG after years (windows back then) and bought few games that I can't install now -_-
STILL A PROBLEM....why, GOG?
I bought the game as a Christmas gift for my kid. Now when it's show time it is not possibe to run GOG app. Reinstalled the app, serched for executables to manually run.. but no solution is available. And this problem seems to be unsolved since years! Shame!

The solution was to avoid using RDP. I connected to son's PC (Windows) remotly to install the game from my laptop's view. Then it crashes. If you go to the PC and run GOG Galaxy there, it will not crash.
If this crash is a kind of feature, not a bug it would be good to see some message pointing to RDP not allowed on something.
Same here in a Windows 11 VM. Opening GOG Galaxy in a RDP session gives the error. Opening from console then connecting to the same session via RDP... OK

GOG needs to work this out.

In the meantime, thanks for the workaround!!!

Had this error on a MacBook Pro M1. Found this thread.

Running /Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/redists/GalaxyCommunication

worked for me. Thanks!

You are a genius and hero. Gog has been a badly behaved app on the Mac from the get go. Rogue processes that won't quit; and that loop of server connection issue... thank you!
MacBook Pro 2, same issue for 2 years and the only app that is not working on my laptop.
And no reaction from the team. GOG became a joke.
