Well, ideally, I'd do my best to make my own set of armor, probably going for either chainmail or scale mail since it'd be lighter and more practical than plate yet still offer significant resistance against walker bites. I'd also carry a hatchet and maybe see if I could find a sword of some sort. I'd basically live as a post-outbreak medieval warrior or something.

Realistically, though, I'd attempt to get my family some place relatively safe, whether with a community or in a place that isn't high risk of being overrun. We'd do our best to work with others because really, in the world of TWD, numbers really are the best defense. The only issue is that people become just as dangerous as the walkers, so we'd exercise some major caution. My preference would be to end up somewhere like the Greene family farm and stick around there long-term, building up defenses as need be, maybe even creating a wall something along the lines of the Hilltop Colony.

After all, (SPOILER for anyone who hasn't read the comics or seen the show) the farm wouldn't have been overrun except by complete happenstance and bad timing and chances are, had Rick's group not burned down the barn and had they come back weeks later, most likely it would have been completely salvageable. Plus, somewhere like a nice, large farm gives enough land, resources and visibility that the only real long-term danger would come from humans and at least humans can sometimes be reasoned with.
Its simple - Kill all zombies!
Honestly, if my world suddenly turns into the world of the walking dead I think I'm pretty much done for. With 2 young kids but a tough wife and no access to any weapons... since guns are not available and can't be bought there is nothing much short of me learning how to turn melee weapons into offensive weapons like what michonne or daryl... then I'm pretty much either starve to dead (cuz I won't have ways to protect myself when going to get supplies) or I just get overran by zombies. Only thing to do is to try to last as long as possible at home and hope the miracle of rescue or being able to outrun the dead... that's it. Sad but true facts.
Barricade myself in the basement with plenty of food and water, and play The Walking Dead to train myself for the real stuff. ;)
Most probably I would be one of first casualties. But if I wasn't then it would be because some group in the area would use my house as a base unaware of my presence. Cuz I'd be in the basement shaking like a lil b*tch that I am.
The first thing I would do is meet my daily needs, while scavenging a few months worth of food on the side. Once successful, I find a desperate, physically-fit-as-possible survivor and blurt out the line "Come with me if you want to live". Then we head towards the library and seal the whole building as much as we can. I rack up as much knowledge as I can about brains, body decomposition, fitness and Frankenstein (yes, 'The Modern Prometheus' Frankenstein). Once we both have gathered enough knowledge me and my apprentice head out to kidnap an unsuspecting lonely zombie and bring them (him? her? it?) to our lair and begin experiments to restructure and improve it's (yes that feels right) brain and psychology (one would argue that the ends justify the means in a situation such as this). Once it reaches near-Human levels we start educating it about fitness and how brains aren't the most nutritious food source for them. He eventually gets it and then I sent my apprentice and my zombie 'protege' to collect two more zombies. And then after those zombies are educated, they four bring four more zombies, and so forth. In the end, most zombies will start to rely on agriculture and developing their fitness, hygiene and pysche and civilization is once more restored (albeit a bit different). I am declared president and I rule happily ever after (till age catches up to me of course).

Alas, all this would not be possible without desperate people, libraries, equipments, and rational zombies; all which would be corrected into a more believable (in The Walking Dead universe ofc) chain of events if I get a chance to play The Walking Dead series. :)
Get that ice climbing pick like Molly had, get some thick leather clothes, and move to a colder climate so the walkers get stiff and slow, preferably high up so that I can survey the area around me.
Middle of the woods/boondocks... elaborate treehouse... a duct tape over leather jacket/pants/gloves suit... semi-auto shotgun (make my own bullets - dimes, rocks, whatever)... a kilij (Turkish sword)... ice pick... vegetable houseplants... rainwater collector, filtration, distiller, storage... maybe some solar panels and a ham radio

To survive, I'd simply find a power generator, boot up my PC, post memes and play The Witcher 3, and wait until the whole thing is over.
I would immediately get in a car with my husband and drive away from the city to my parents' home in the countryside. My dad is a passionate hunter and we have a lot of weapons, a garden, food, we can get water from the well if necessary - we would be able to defend ourselves and have everything we need there. I am pretty confident that we would do just fine :)

First I'll make some catch poles to catch zombies.
Then I'll put them on treadmills that can generate electricity.
I'll store all the electricity into batteries and sell them to Goglodytes so they can play their DRM-free games.

Profit!
Team up with some folks, let them establish a cozy and safe shelter, then eat them.
My plan for survival would be to just become a zombie. That's eternal life, bay-bee. Besides—they're the good guys anyway.
if i found myself in the walking dead universe I think I would find a weapon, find a safe shelter, team up with a small group of people you can trust, scavenge essentials i.e food weapons and meds & Power / fuel sources, and not necessarily in that order.
In my case, I do not think my life changes much, I have always been a zombie without a social life, possibly I am locked up at home until I stop making electricity, at that moment I will stop playing whatever has me hooked at the moment, possibly the Witcher 3 or dragon age, to eventually go outside and die.
To be a zombie again, only this time I would not be alone.
