wolfsite: Just be careful with Zoom platform, it is like GOG a company and companies will in the end do what's best for business so they would also eventually do what is best to make the business grow.

Humble Bundle is an example as at first they were heavily into DRM free games and bundles, today they are much much bigger but now most released games and bundles are Steam Key exclusives with DRM free being a rare commodity.
DRM free is a redeeming quality only if you are respected as a person or a poster.
akin if you hire a carpenter to do your drywall and he tells you you are an idiot and a bad housekeeper, no matter his price I'd throw him on his ass!

Gog has too much blind following. Fans that'll have you believe they can do little/no wrong. It's resulted in them doubling down on their questionable decisions, as long as the money keeps flowing right.

This boycott highlights the disconnect Gog has with much of their older customers (you know, the ones that helped build them up).
I've been told that corpos follow the money and not whatever original belief they used to have or believe they still have.
But this house of cards was built on those original ideals/stance/belief (pure drm-free to name one). When they take/disrupt/dilute these foundations, then the trust between them and their original customers gets shaky.

Devotion should've been here since end of 2020. They backtracked, they offered a paultry excuse of 'many gamers' not wanting it. Many could've been any amount, they chose the possibility of earning more from the Chinese market (egging on this kind of censorship globally). This is done against the wishes and trust of their original fanbase, their customers who by this point have put up with alot of their poor decisions already.

As usual, not everyone would care enough as long as they get to play and Gog can continue being just another storefront (we have steam, epic, origin and itch already to name a few).
But we're not just part of their crowd, we're here for some slim chance this all turns around...

and we get sharky and the sheep attack us instead of the wolves!

very slim chance but that is how most things work these days.

Time4Tea, I know I'm late, but for the record I vote for "A". Keep the original reasons for the boycott. Otherwise, we'd have to start a new participant list, which I guess is possible but would deflate the movement quite a bit.

If someone wants to boycott GOG over its policy regarding Russia and Belarus, please start a new thread. Many users on the list strongly disagree on that particular motive, myself included.

Except "DRM and censorship" were not "the original reasons" for the boycott; at least not entirely, even if they were some of the reasons.

What's happening now is a revisionist history retconn.

How do you know that when only 20 from over 100 voiced their opinion here? And not all of those were for option A.

This isn't true. Encroachment of DRM on GOG and game censorship (specifically Devotion) were the original reasons for this boycott thread. All of the issues listed in the first post relate to those top-level categories.

To everyone: I had requested a change to the thread title a few days ago to a staff member, but didn't receive a reply. I will reach out to someone else now, fingers crossed.

As someone who was actually around for the start of the boycott, yes it was. gog.com sold us pre-orders of Devotion and refused to deliver on them, or in some people's cases, refund their money. All while citing Chinese spam bots pretending to be actual users sending them form complaint e-mails and posts as the supposed reason. This entire spam campaign was part of a massive coordinated effort to try to drive *all* Real Chinese AKa, Taiwan, AKA, the republic of China based game developer's content off of the internet. It was straight up harassment for the sake of censorship and gog.com folded like a cheap suit without even attempting to fight back, knowing literal hundreds of thousands of real customers wanted not just this game, but a ton of other games by Taiwanese developers that had been targets of similar harassment campaigns.

Noone in the communist occupied mainland can buy games from a western retailer anyways, and to be rather blunt, there's no point gog.com trying to appese a non existent market to begin with. There never was. When they did it anyways they chose to alienate core customers and even today people continue harassing gog.com's actual customers *SPECIFICALLY* because they folded.

So do try to keep up with the history kid.

Time4Tea: So, next Wednesday, March 23rd will be about 2 weeks since the voting opened on the future of this boycott thread. Here are the current vote scores:

A 3

B 5

As a reminder, these are the two voting options:

A) This thread should stay focused on the two issues that it was originally set up to highlight, which are DRM and censorship of games on GOG.com. The thread title should also be changed to clarify.

B) This thread should be a 'catch-all' list of people who want to boycott GOG for any reason. It is therefore intended to be 'the boycott thread', where anyone who wants to boycott GOG for any reason should sign up.

So far, the level of voting has been very low - less than 10% of signers have voiced an opinion. As it stands, option B is narrowly in the lead.

As I said before, I do not support option B and if it passes then I will be stepping down as facilitator of the boycott thread. In that event, unless ownership of a thread can be transferred to someone else (which I doubt), I will be requesting that this thread be closed and someone else will need to start another one, carrying over the names.
I am late as I rarely visit GoG anymore and I was checking in to see if things have improved and I it appears not - despite GoG's "recommitment to its principles"

I vote for B. Even though the original post did not list many of my reasons for me personally boycotting (still have not made a purchase since the summer sale of June 2019, now approaching 3 years).

I vote B because having a different boycott thread for every issue would make a mess. I prefer one thread to address the issues.

I also request that when people post in here - stay on the topic. Make posts to join/add name to the list, remove your name from the list, state why you are buying again (GoG addressed your concerns and made the changes) or no longer buying (reviews being deleted, poor customer service, censorship, etc.).

So many games I have on my wishlist are in this sale and I would love to buy them, but it appears nothing has improved now the ban to selling in Russia. This could be because of government sanctions that they can't sell (that is nothing that GoG can do about that), but I disagree with punishing the Russian people if it is a decision GoG makes by itself. Especially as they have no problem bowing to the CCP and spitting in the face of everybody else with integrity.

Well, in their recent rampage to lock down all threads linking to competitors, GOG also tries to silence the 'Actually DRM-free stores' thread. (https://www.gog.com/forum/general/list_of_drmfree_video_games_digital_distributors/page1)

Let's make sure that we don't forget that there are alternatives to GOG!

This new title is so fucking dumb.

Like, mind-scorchingly, brain-meltingly dumb.

"Boycotting DRM on GOG" - ok... I guess you can skip Cyberpunk and a handful of other games then.

"Boycotting Game Censorship on GOG" - How does one go about that? I mean, if the game is censored (ie. not available for purchase), there's not much to boycott there in the first place, innit.

"Boycotting GOG due to DRM and Game Censorship" would make sense. Maybe another name change is in order. Maybe have another poll about that.

How very unfortunate that the name change arrived just in time that "Wholesale closure of threads that actually made this forum a better place" is now no longer a valid reason for boycott either. But I guess it's only fitting that a storefront that's hell-bent on shooting itself in the foot gets a boycott that's shooting itself in the foot.

Engerek01: I have 635 games on my GOG library.
When I stopped buying from GOG a few years ago, I had about 70 games on STEAM. Now I "own" 450 there. Haven't bought a single thing from GOG since and hadn't used the forums for almost 2 years. And I see that not only things haven't improved, but they have gotten a lot worse.

It is also surprising to see how the tables have turned. Years ago STEAM was the evil company with a toxic community while GOG was the hero protecting user rights. The forum community was the best; Kindest, smartest, and most helpful. Now, STEAM is the company that is protecting my user rights and has a much better community while GOG's user base became toxic like its practices.

And GOG chose this.

ReynardFox: Boycotting GOG and not Steam is some big time hypocrisy, as if Steam has any moral high ground or even remotely cares about your rights, and the less said about Steam's brainwashed, white knighting, actually toxic fans the better. You're completely delusional if you think steam are the good guys.
Steam doesn't pretend to care about anything other than it's bottom line, and it does have satisfactory customer support beyond offering store credit. It isn't great, but it is 100% better than GOG is at present.

Yes, the 2 hour limit before for a refund and the non-existent customer support is so great. Big company like Steam should be so much better with their customer support. I remember buying games that were completely broken and steam would not even refund me back in the day.

Yeah.. their service isn't like that now. 2 hours in game (and two weeks overall) is for automatic refunds, you can still apply for and receive refunds beyond the two hour window on a case by case basis.
