Of course, that game isn't without its flaws. For example:
1. On hard mode, the first battle isn't exactly fair. What is very likely to happen is that the enemy will critical you, taking off over 2/3rds of your health, and because of the way the battle system works, the enemy then gets a free attack, finishing you off. Time to reload from the last save point. (Note that this is so early in the game that you don't have any options other than to attack, so the only way past this is to hope you don't get unlucky.)
2. Related to 1: Main character death = game over. What makes it worse is that some enemies use instant death attacks, and there are 2 elements of it, so it isn't easy to be immune to both. Consider that you can only save at save points, and this can be quite frustrating. (If the game let you save anywhere, this wouldn't be as much of an issue.)
3. Irreversible decisions at level up; when your main character has to discard a skill at level up due to learning a new one, the discarded skill can never be re-learned. Ever.
4. XP distribution: When the main character's level is higher, your monsters gain less XP. This makes it impractical to level up, say, a new Pixie later in the game.
5. I dislike the music.

I don't find any of those points negatives. I like uncompromising games with permanent decisions and not saving anywhere that don't hold your hand. Null Light and Dark will protect you from instant death skills. I also really liked the music. But everyone likes different things.

Grinding and random battles might be considered by some people to be negatives as well.

a) It was a multiplayer game and you didn't have to sue their own servers to play;
b) They released the Aurora toolkit so people could make their own levels, nay, worlds;
c) multiplayer was so fun and encouraged teamwork to solve player-made levels; and
d) a player could act as "dungeon master" in multiplayer games;

This game rocked when I got into it.

I'm trending between the first two Fallouts, Arcanum and Vampire: Bloodlines as not just the best but also only examples I know of where a serious attempt was made to simulate a pen & paper like RPG scenario. From the CRPG point of view I spend more time in Oblivion & Fallout 3 (both modded to the teeth) together than all of the above together.

... so... all of them are the best? :P
My favourites (all of which I have replayed many times):

Wasteland (the first one)
Ultima Underworld (the first one)
Pool of Radiance (the first one)
My final vote would go for Deus Ex.

I was thinking if you combined Vampire Bloodlines with length and breadth of Morrowind, it's power would combine like Captain Planet to be the best RPG ever. And also environmentally friendly.

Special mention will always go to Vagrant Story. I love the design, Risk Breakers are so kickass man. They just don't make games like that anymore. No sir.

Best RPG that hasn't been released yet, Persona 5.

How do I know this? I can predict the future. But only about videogames, and ones called persona.
