tinyE: I liked Blood 2.
avatar
HunchBluntley: Case in point! :P
Hey, I liked Blood 2 as well, not as good as the first, but still ok.

Must plays:
Baldurs Gate
Stalker
FEAR
Oblivion and Morrowind fully modded out.
Serious Sam
AOE2 and AOE Mythology

Games to avoid:
Dark Souls - can't say this enough, think it might be the worse game ever (PC anyways).
GTA 4 - DRM hell, followed by a pretty sub-par game, worst in the whole series.
COD xx - any after number 2.

Too many really in both categories to list.
I'd like to recommend you a whole slew of yays and nays for adventure and puzzle games, but I need to know what specific types you like and how difficult you like 'em first.

TheStrangerOfDni: I haven't found many games I haven't liked. But I do prefer horror games, shooters, and puzzle games.
If you like puzzle games you might want to have a look at Blocks That Matter and Tetrobot & Co.
Horror and puzzle eh?

Downfall gets my first recommendation. It's a point & click horror game that is darker than most games, in both theme(s) and visuals! Now there is a remake of it currently in production (to be released later this year) so the publisher has decided to offer it for free from their website, or you can buy it here of course. If you want it as a freebie just visit the publisher's site and click on Free Games http://screen7.co.uk/

Next up is The Cat Lady. The Cat Lady is a very loose sequel to Downfall and in my opinion is better than it, and better than most games here. It's dark, distributing and occasionally...uplifting? Yep, a game that starts off with the main character narrating their suicide note somehow finds a way to have some positively uplifting moments. Can't recommend this game enough, go grab it!

As for FPS and horror, the first that come to mind are F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R. 2. I've only played the first F.E.A.R. but I found the AI to be outstanding (when it has room to move) but the rest of the game was just so so. The horror bits were (for me) predictable and well...just not scary.

But fear not! (pun mildly intended), there is Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi, a horror FPS with roguelike tendencies. Pretty simple game mechanics, but tons of fright to be found. There are occasional jump scares but that isn't the main source of horror, rather it's the heavy handed and excellent atmosphere, complimented by music that will keep you on the very edge of your seat! Even when you expect to find an enemy you'll still jump a bit, thanks to the wonderful air of suspense.

If it's horror alone you want, but in a 3D world then check out the Penumbra series. You've probably heard of the Amnesia series, yeah? Well Penumbra was created by the Amnesia devs before Amnesia was a thing, Penumbra is basically Amnesia V.1, and in my opinion better thanks to more likable characters and stronger writing. I would also venture forth that Penumbra had a better atmosphere than Amnesia, few games have made me feel truly as "alone" as the first two Penumbra games.
You've had a lot of input on specific games, so this is more of a comment on the general ratings of each game---avoid anything that has an average lower than 4 stars until you've done more research. The game's specific forum can sometimes alert you to potential pitfalls (like issues with certain video cards, etc.). If a game's average rating is under three stars (and there are very few games on GOG that dip so low), that's "Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!"---don't buy!
Opinions are pointless, you should look at videos on youtube to see whether the games look fun.
That is far more informative than 'this game is trash' or 'this is the best FPS ever'.

If you insist on getting people's opinions, save yourself time and focus on those with 500+ review scores.
Everybody likes them more or less.

Those with less review scores files under 'obscenely arbitrary opinions'.

If you like Stealth games, you need to play Thief (1 and 2), Hitman: Silent Assassin and Mark of the Ninja.

I quote PaterAlf for the DROD series: the 1+2+3 pack is probably the best price/value ratio on the whole catalog, and it they are the ultimate puzzle games.

I also recommend you Planescape: Torment, having the best narrative in the media by far, and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri for a great strategy title.

totally depends on your taste, there are many stellar games here that I wouldnt touch due to their genre, like platformers or rogues but that doesnt mean they are not good, just personal taste.

if you like dungeon crawlers then Legends of Grimlock 1, 2 or Lands of Lore for real old time style.

System Shock 2 is incredibly fun with some mods for a plain shooter.

for adventures/puzzles I'd recommend Tex Murphy series, Gabriel Knight series, Grim Fandango as must haves

if you cant stand having to restart over and over a game due to insta ' death' or game mechanics then I'd avoid little big adventure, the last train off the top of my head but there are many more like that

but most of all kiss your bank account goodbye as gog is very very good at luring you with massive sales to lure you into game collecting heh

have fun

Never played either Blood -- I was just joking around. (Though the second game's engine does look like ass to me.)

Well, you do have to play both Blood games now to make up :o)

tinyE: The Easter Eggs.

Name one other game, any genre, where you can find Jack Torrance? :P
Ah yeah, there are some great little details hidden away in that game.

I can enjoy any puzzle or adventure games. Not picky there. Anything works. As for difficulty, I enjoy a good challenge.

TheStrangerOfDni: EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to put preferences in the original post! I do prefer shooters, horror games, and puzzle games.
Although it doesn't fit any of those (excluding some sequences where you need to use items and abilities to progress within the level), Psychonauts (3D platformer) is a must-play. Just buy it. It's awesome, hilarious, AND clever.

Welcome to GOG!
