zeogold: Well, judging from your avatar and name, I guess I don't need to tell you about the Myst series, huh?
Nope. Good catch, though. Played the games since childhood, yet I still haven't beaten them.
(That's my resolution for this year. Beat the Myst games. Worked through Myst: Masterpiece Edition, and I'm now working through Riven.)

TheStrangerOfDni: Are the ones on here better than the Shadowrun shooter from 2007? Because that one was awful.
avatar
adaliabooks: Never played that one, but I'd say yes.
They're turn based tactical RPGs (pretty much my favourite genre so I am a little biased) and very good examples of the genre.

And as I see you have expressed a preference for puzzle games; I'd definitely recommend SpaceChem. You can usually pick it up for under £1 (or a $1 I presume) when there's a big sale on and it's an excellent puzzle game.
I don't play many shooters / FPSs any more, but I can certainly recommend Unreal Tournament and Jedi Knight 2.
Those all sound good, and I saw a review for Jedi Knight 2 from Gggmanlives on YouTube that made it out to be a lot of fun. Thanks for the recommendations!

My faves here are the Commandos and Tomb Raider games though at heart I am an RTS junky so I also like to push two very underrated titles, Conquest: Frontier Wars and Battle Realms.

Also, a shitty Star Wars game is still a pretty good game. :P

Jedi Knight 2 is great, there are 3 other games in the series (2 before and 1 after) but I haven't played them so can't personally recommend them. I hear the earlier ones are good, but a bit dated these days. Jedi Academy (the last in the series) is also meant to be very good, unfortunately I haven't managed to beat JK2 yet to move on to playing it due to my rusty FPS skills...

Well, not so sure about good puzzle games. *calls Zeogold to the rescue*

But certainly the following (series of) games should fit you rather well:

- Painkiller
- Doom series
- Quake series
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R series
- Metro 2033 & Metro: Last Light Redix

And that's just the ones to come to mind directly, so there may be more...
Shooter and horror huh? If you haven't played STALKER yet that would be an good suggestion.
Also try out some of the space/deepsea combatgames like X-Wing, Wing Commander, Freespace or Archimedean Dynasty.

Agreed about Jedi Knight 2. Really good game, though it takes a while to get a lightsaber. I can comment on Jedi Academy, however. In many ways, it's an expansion to Jedi Knight 2, though you play as a Jedi Academy student instead of Kyle. The missions are interesting, the presentation is great, the gameplay is basically the same as Jedi Knight 2, and there is loads of fan service. However, the story is just bad, mostly because of the protagonist's friend Rosh.
Welcome to GOG community. I hope you enjoy your stay.

Game recommandation would depend on what kind of games you like. So I will take my time to tell you my favorite games and why I like them so you can decide.

IF you love RPGs. (you can click the names to go to game page)

Baldur's Gate is probably best RPG ever made. It runs on infinity engine with Dungeons and Dragons 2.5 rules. IT may be hard to learn and even harder to master but it has the best story I have seen in any game. (I havent played Planescape Torment yet.) You should buy BG1 and BG2 together and use theEnhanced edition versions of these games which doesnt require any modding but twice expansive. Your choice.

Neverwinter Nights is an awesome game with D&D 3.0 rules which is a lot easier to learn than D&D 2.5 rules. I just finished NWN and all of its expansions and I had a blast. Medium level story with awesome gameplay. Its made by same company who did Baldur's Gate which is Bioware who is known for making Mass Effect and Dragon Age games (which I am desperatly hoping will come to GOG one day. )

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic , in other words KOTOR, is an other living legend of Bioware. This game is much more easier than Baldur's Gate but like any other Bioware game it has an amazing story. This is my favorite RPG of all time and I dont think you will be disappointed. My advice, dont watch any letsplays and dont read any reviews about this game before completing it as it may ruin the fun you will get. ;) You will thank me later.

STRATEGY

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a must for any strategy game lover no matter where you come from. You have towns which you develop and fight creatures and other players with your heroes and the creatures you command. Its an awesome experience and you will love it.

Master Of Orion They are selling MOO1 and MOO2 together so you cant go wrong with this. Some people think MOO2 is the best game ever made and some think (including me) MOO1 is the best game ever made. They both run on Dosbox and graphics may be outdated but the fun never gets old. You start with one planet on the galaxy and develop your technology, design your ships and invade other planets. If I say I finished MOO a thousand times I wouldnt probably be far away from the truth.

First Person SHOOTER

Clive Barker's Undying is the best FPS I have ever played. Very dark and scary atmosphere where you need to solve the story of a cursed family. I havent played the GOG version already I own it but i am sure it works.

Well I own 300 games but these are the ones I would start with. Have fun and feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Wow, long list of suggestions! Thanks! I've actually been meaning to try some of the ones you mentioned, specifically Undying and KOTOR.

It became so much of a joke that on the second insomnia sale, even GOG itself trolled the game, and us, with a fake appearance. I believe it was 10000 copies or more, but it disappeared in a split second, just enough to give some people heart attacks.
Since you mentioned horror games and shooters I would say:

FEAR 1+2

(if it was not already mentioned, did not see it in the posts)

For old-school shooters, you can't really go wrong with Doom or Blood. The latter is an incredibly challenging game, though.

When it comes to more modern shooters, Unreal Gold and F.E.A.R. are really good.

Primarily horror-based games are System Shock 2 (personally, I don't really like it all that much and think System Shock 1 is vastly superior, but most people tend to prefer 2); Clive Barker's Undying; I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream (an adventure game, more unsettling than outright scary).

Realms of the Haunting is also a good game that combines horror, shooting and point & click adventure-style puzzles into a rather strange mix. Not necessarily a "must play" title, though.

Keep in mind that all or most of the above games go on sale rather frequently.

Also, take a look at the free games. Really good ones in there. I recommend Beneath a Steel Sky, Tyrian 2000 and Ultima: Worlds of Adventure 2 - Martian Dreams.

Oh, and welcome to GOG. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

TheStrangerOfDni:
A couple decent horror games I don't think anyone's mentioned yet are Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Outlast. They're both first-person, but neither (as far as I know) has any combat -- you just run/hide from the scary things. I haven't played any of the Amnesia games, but a lot of people seem to like The Dark Descent (just don't confuse it with its follow-up that's also sold here, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, which is supposed to kind of suck). I've only played a little of Outlast, but it seems pretty cool, if you're okay with lots of jump scares.

Also, The Last Door is supposed to be a really good horror point-and-click, if you don't mind chunky pixel graphics.

On the shooter front, I don't think anyone's mentioned the Shadow Warrior reboot from a couple years ago, which is supposed to be really fun, especially when using the katana. And I can personally recommend Hotline Miami, a top-down shooter, which is brutal, intense, fast-paced, trippy, and an awful lot of fun. (And if it helps, there's kind of a puzzle element in clearing some of the levels, since it's advisable to rely on stealth, speed, and silent kills where you can, so as not to get swarmed when you DO start shooting.)

Welcome to GOG! =)

If you like puzzle games, the DROD series is a must play. It's one of the best puzzle game series ever made and it will keep you occupied for a very long time.
