Get a proper firewall and stop whining. Especially here where no one has any power to do anything about it.

Stop being the asshole you are and notice that I must have a "proper" firewall as I know what is connecting to where.

Scriptinterpreter.exe (which I assume is the actual program trying to connect) appears to be a GOG Galaxy thing. It is not specific to this game, and the devs of this game have, AFAIK, nothing to do with it.

You might want to direct this to a Galaxy-specific thread.

You are right, but for some reason only this game shows this behaviour until now. I don't feel the urge to debug the whole connection with wireshark and other means, but I'm sure I don't have to feel comfortable about a scriptinterpreter which is likely fetching a script from the internet ...

PS: We agree this is a major security issue, right? ;)

Although the script itself may actually be harmless - in that not only does it not actively mess with your computer, but it may not collect any personal information - I do completely agree with you insofar as I do not like anything attempting connections to anywhere on the internet without a) explicitly telling me this is happening, and b) asking me whether I am OK with this before it does it.

There are a number of games that just use the default Unity settings, which attempt to grab basic usage data and send them off, all without asking and often without you being notified. Although by default Unity doesn't collect much, it does AFAIR contain data which may identify the machine and/or user.

I don't think this script is designed to send identifying data, but the fact that it does attempt a connection, and doesn't notify one of this fact nor allow one to disable it, is something that GOG should do something about.

In the meantime, if you're concerned about it I'd suggest using the offline installers - I'm pretty sure this script isn't run then (I don't think it's even included in the downloaded files in this case). Unfortunately this generally means having to wait a few extra days for the offline installers to become available...

This latest patch seems to have messed something up. The game always starts in windowed mode instead of full screen like I have set in the options. I have to go to the options and set it to windowed, then back to full screen. The performance seems worse too. I have a 144Hz G-Sync display, and while I never turned on the FPS counter in the overlay before, you can feel the difference in the smoothness of the mouse between 60Hz and 144Hz. Switching on the FPS counter, it seems to be locked to 64 FPS, no matter what I set the graphics to. It definitely was a lot smother before this update.

It now always starts in windowed mode for me too. ALT+ENTER fixes that easily enough (although it's a bit annoying having to do this every time the game starts, it saves having to mess around with the options screen).

Personally I didn't notice any performance drops - maybe they've activated one of the VSync modes? You should be able to force it off using the software for your graphics card.

Disco Elysium

bbe2afa0 is the new version as of 11 hours ago according to Galaxy.

Backup installer for bbe2afa0 and patch for updating from 4801e0fb to bbe2afa0 are available right now.

No changelog in GOG or anywhere else that Google could find, and the ZA/UM community manager on Discord only said "Few bug fixes"

Personal note: they didn't fix the windowed on start-up bug yet... wow

VSync on of off wouldn't affect performance with a G-Sync display since the display handles the syncing and not the GPU. It could be related to starting in windowed mode, as I've had this happen with other Unity games if the game loses focus or alt-tab out. Pillars of Eternity for example gets stuck at 22 FPS, but it returns to normal if I exit to the menu and load a save, transition to a new area. I tried that and it wouldn't go above 64 FPS. The patch today seems to have improved the performance. I'm getting 110 FPS now, but it still starts windowed.

It turns out I was already running the latest patch when I wrote that, so wouldn't have noticed the FPS drop anyway since it had been fixed. I definitely still had it starting in windowed mode (though it seems to start full-screen while initially loading, then switches to windowed mode before showing the menu for some reason). Alt+Enter still works at least, but it's curious why it would start doing this.

Performance hasn't improved, it's all over the place. Depending on where I'm at, I get between 45 and 110 FPS. When you've gotten used to how smooth the mouse moves at 144 Hz, it's easy to notice when the frame rate drops.

Changelog for Update 5bad0c96 (24 January 2020):

Welcome to Hardcore True Detective mode. The city at the end of the world just got more existential.

So, what's different about Hardcore Mode?

- YOU'RE GONNA FAIL MORE You'll fail more. That's a fact of life in Hardcore Mode. The difficulty of every Check goes up, bringing your chances of success down. Solving this case without being a Total Disaster Cop is even harder than normal. On the bright side, you'll have more to be proud of if you do solve the case, even if your dignity got left behind with the Union of Moribund Alcoholics. And the Cuno. And Klaasje. And -- well, just take your victories where you can.
- YOU'RE GONNA BE POORER The pornographically poor people Martinaise have even less money to drop, meaning there's less for you to pick up. Lining your pockets with that delicious lucre is going to be nigh on impossible. Better get used to picking up every scrap of tare you can find. At least Roy still gives okay deals in his pawnshop, as you sell off your material wealth for a pittance. You've always had to hustle to survive. Now you've got to hustle more.
- YOU'RE GONNA GET SCREWED BY BIG-PHARMA What's more, pharmacutical prices have gone up. That's right! Failing costs you even more. Not only are your favorite over-the-counter drugs are more expensive -- they don't even heal you as much. Even if you find a forgotten stash in the streets, it won't be as good. That's how they get you though, isn't it? They charge you more for less, and make a killing as you die.
- YOU'RE GONNA LEARN TO LOVE DRUGS If you weren't a fan of booze and cigarettes before, let alone the hard stuff -- well, good luck to you. Life's a lot more bearable with those pick-me-ups. When all other help abandons you, and your sweet drugs are all that's left, it'll be harder to resist the call. Sweet ciggys to clear your head, an extra drink to build up your courage. Hardcore Mode makes it clearer how Martinaise fell into disrepute. No wonder there's a drug problem when folks have nothing else to turn to.
- YOU'RE GONNA TREASURE YOUR CLOTHES The few posessions you do have become more important. That FRITTTE Plastic Rain Coat never protected you so good. Your Amphibian Sports Visor always helped you find stuff, but that stuff never mattered so much. Those Flare-Cut, though, and those Green Snakeskin Shoes -- you might want to lose them before you try to make any jumps.
- YOU'RE GONNA THINK MORE CAREFULLY You've got to be cafeful with what goes in your head, too. You've got to plan carefully what you start thinking and when. The Thought Cabinet debuffs are more painful when you're already more liable to fail. Can you really afford to indulge your Superstar fantasies for a few hours when it's already harder to think straight? On the flip side, the bonuses thoughts offer might push you down paths you wouldn't take otherwise. Maybe it's not sexy to be a Boring Cop, but that extra stability might really help you out.
- YOU'RE GONNA WISE UP FASTER There is one saving grace you have in Hardcore Mode. The self-help books, at last, are right: Failure builds character. In this worse world, you'll gain token amounts of extra XP every time you finish a Task. You'll lever faster and higher, if only marginally. You'll be able to become a more well-rounded cop, better than you ever were before. So that's something, at least!
- LOOKING BACK Again, Hardcore Mode isn't for everyone. But if you've loved this strange story in this forgotten city, it's a way to experience it from a new perspective -- a Martinaise perspective. For those of us here at ZA/UM, who've already spent hundreds of hours playing, this new mode been a wonderful chance to revisit the game in a fresh way.

Good luck, detective.
