Hi I have to say despite being a fan of this genre for a long time I have yet to play this game. Anyone else pick this up too? Is it you first time with the game?

Edit: Lol at mis-spelled topic title, oops :p

I think I owned a boxed copy of this back when. I find it sad that I totally forget these things. From what I remember it was a lot of fun, and at the time a nice experience. I'm sure that translated over with the GoG release.

I'll be picking it up maybe in a week or two.
My girlfriend is a fan of the game and we had been searching for this game but could not find it anywhere. Now it's finally on GoG so I'm new to the game, but my girlfriend isn't. I wonder how you can actually play co-op in this game. I mean, it's played by mouse and keyboard together I guess.
Still have the boxed version. Have been playing a few times since release. The main bother was collecting the patches and the modules I wanted.
It's a lot of fun. I'd tried the demo and always wanted to play the complete game, but never willing to pony up the $20 and bother with mailorder. It's worth noting that Paul Cuisset was behind this game - better known for Flashback and Fade to Black.

It's not 5 stars, but I felt wrong bringing its rating down with 4. One thing it has going for it is a real sense of depth and darkness. The dungeons aren't very linear and it's very possible to feel lost. Some of the passages are pretty cramped, even frustratingly cluttered with junk. And the darkness is really dark for a 3D dungeon crawl.

There's an overworld that feels sort of like a hedge maze. It's claustrophobic, but if you enjoyed (or just miss) that feel from the older console games, it might bring a smile. (For some reason Landstalker comes to mind, though it's not similar in gameplay at all.)

Bonus points - or points off depending on how you look at it - for what I'm pretty sure is a sample from the Alien score which is used as background ambience. You can hear it in the main town as the music is starting.
Bought it when released, still have the CD (got it to work on Win7 too). It's a lot of fun. Very much like Diablo except that you can play (singleplayer) with two characters. The items aren't as interesting in general (Darkstone won't addict you in that regard as much as Diablo2 say) but the Thief's theft ability was tons of fun when it came to looking for the Unique items.

Anyway....the graphics (even for the day) weren't the best. Very polygon-y 3D and not pretty. But a fun action-RPG romp. Loved the Monk class.
I'm now playing the game for the first time - I had always been interested, but just never got around to buying it. I love the aesthetic of the game, and I am very fond of the graphics...but I generally tend to love older 3D graphics for some odd reason. I still think Gauntlet Legends looks beautiful.

Also, I wasn't awareone of the people behind Flashback was involved with DarkStone - I absolutely loved Flashback.
Oh, and as for co op...its an excellent co operative game. I set up an Ad Hoc network and then host a TCP/IP multiplayer game for my girlfriend and I to each play on our laptops...so far this is the only way I have found to do it, and its really smooth.

All you need to do is create an Ad Hoc network under Network in Control Panel. Make sure everyone who will be playing connectes to the Ad Hoc network. Once you (as host) have made a TCP/IP game room, you can hit the A key and your IP address will be displayed in game. Then, every player who wants to join just needs to click new game, multiplayer, join a session, TCP/IP and type in the IP address displayed on the hosts game and when they search it should bring up the game room.
I missed this game completely when it was released. This is a great gem of a game!
I started creating an art mod for Darkstone last year (it's always had a fond place in my heart). I'll have to dig it up and finish it.

I think the "hedgemaze" comment from someone earlier is correct but I still really like the game. I would give it a 3 1/2 stars on a fair scale.

TIP: I went into my video card control panel and forced max AA and anisotropic filtering. Helps reduce the jaggies!

Fond memories playing this game back in the day on my playstation. Had no idea it was a port then, but I really enjoyed it. More then 10 years later, I am still a fan of this genre. As with any game on here, there should a be a disclaimer. This is game is like the first Diablo, but it is no way near the sophistication of Diablo 2 or the Diablo clones to follow. The world here is a great deal smaller and linear. The interface is archaic and the game is locked at a low resolution. If you don't mind these limitations then by all means, give this game a try.

I had never played Darkstone before. I like rogue-likes, but never really invested much time in them (played only a few hours of Diablo, for instance).

I bought this game yesterday and played for a few hours, then played it again in the morning and now I'm eager to play it again tonight. I'm having LOTS of fun with this game, it's great!

I don't know how it compares with Diablo, as I don't know Diablo very well, but moving the camera around is cool, and the controls work pretty well. Now I want to try the multiplayer mode (someone mentioned in another thread that a tool called GameRanger it useful for multiplayer games).

Three months later, I'm back for an update...

I've pretty much beaten Dark Stone a few days after my last post. Well, being honest, I got my game locked up pretty near the end because I sold an item I shouldn't have sold and couldn't advance :) But that's OK, as I had pretty much played through the whole game when it happened.

About a month ago I started playing Diablo I and beaten it. I loved it, so now I can compare both games.

In my opinion, Diablo is pure genius and it's hard to compare it with other titles. However, even though Darkstone has a few rough edges and may not be as perfect, I guess I had more fun playing it than playing Diablo. I Definitely recommend it, even for Diablo fans. What a wonderful little game.
I have owned this game in some form or fashion for about 10 years or so. I didn't get into gaming until I was about 38 years old, I was too busy raising little gamers. Darkstone was the first game I ever beat. I found it at a store in a clearance bin for $5.00 and had to get it. I was looking for something fun, a little challenging, and was tired of JRPGs. I hadn't even played Diablo by that time, so what I learned about hack & slash games from Darkstone helped me a lot with Diablo. I saw that GOG had the PC version of the game and had to get it pronto! I will always play this game about once a year. It's a tradition now!
I played the demo when the game was new, but didnt have the cash to pick it up. When GoG added it i had to buy it. Its a great game. Only thing is, comparing it to diablo 2, the 3D graphics didnt age as well as diablos 2D graphics.
