Arnuz: I played this smartly outmanouvering some worms to grab the loot without fighting them... Then it felt like cheating so I replayed it fighting them. What do you guys think?
avatar
southern: That's possible?!?!?!?!?!?!? How do you do it exactly??????
I think it's cool. Dunno about rules or balance so much.

Orcs, Day 35

Lizards gain more ground. A single fairy raids our capital and fires oru Poison Altar, but some archers survive the haze and retake the city.
Someone is a bit lost, it seems.

You can access the hero screen during a battle just like you can on the overland map. You can access the item screen during battle just like on the overland map. So just walk over the item bag and pick it up. You can also swap equipment mid-battle, but this probably isn't a big deal since your best stuff is still going to be your best stuff.

I had assumed that the item bags showed during a ruin battle simply as decoration and to give you an idea of how much loot is around if you win. I'd already heavily ingrained that assumption by the time I realized you could swap gear mid-battle (unlike in Shadow Magic).

A friend of mine said it would be awesome if you could steal the items and then flee and I told him you couldn't! Little did I know... Swapping items is cool too.
How'd aow2 lose so many features anyway? Baffling. I guess for the same reason they didn't get around to adding racial priests.

Part of it is probably some balance/simplification. I'm really not sure that stealing the items and running away was supposed to be a viable tactic for ruin raiding. It makes the guards a lot less...guardy.

I suppose I could test it by dropping items on the ground and starting a battle on that hex and seeing if they show up.
That's right.

Since this was only my second dungeon I had only 1 ring. In this dungeon I found a sword, a helm and a tunic, making my leader twice as strong. Life-stealing yay! At the start stuff like this makes a big difference.

I ended up equipping the items by running around the worms and only then fighting the worms. That seems like a good compromise, giving you an opportunity to be tacticool but without really dissing the monster guards. They would wait you at the exit right?

It needs to be said that you lose the XPs if you don't fight them - the dungeon becomes explored if you leave it without fighting the monsters but picking up everything. So perhaps this is self balancing and how you do it is just a matter of preference, I don't know.

I'm not a fan of doing anything with the loot until the guards are all dead or converted. Just seems too abusive to me. If others have other opinions, feel free to chime in.

The monsters, once activated, are going to start pursuing targets. They aren't going to camp.

Huh. I wonder if "explored" means "looted" or "empty". Can you go back in to fight the guards (who are now guarding nothing) or do the guards leave in humiliation if you waltz out with the loot?

No, Southern is still lost, it seems.

I've always picked up gear as I walked past it (if in Manual Combat ofc), kinda surprised the possibility of doing so wasn't well known.

If the general consensus is that it is okay to loot before you're done murdering, I'm fine with that and will adjust my tactics accordingly. Not like the other way around is enforceable or even can be checked.

Anyone else have any input?
After a proper diet the beasts of the underdark escape from us! Soylent Goblin is the Goblins!

Edit: PS: Southern isn't lost! What happened There??

Lizards, Day 11

Some humans required a lot of gold to join our team. We decided to purchase their services via the Murder Discount.

Orcs, Day 12

I can't figure out to get this damn staff to heal me. Maybe because I'm not a Druid.
Gobs 12

Using my equipment I personally splatter all around the walls of a ruin its dwarven squatters, obtaining even more powerful items.

I've managed to use a heal item in tactical combat.
Lizards, Day 12

We see more orcs on the West side of the invisible line. War may ye occur.
