by Illusion Softworks, Pterodon, Gathering of Developers
Genres:Shooter
Themes:Action, Warfare
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:Vietcong is an tactical FPS known for its realism focused gameplay and at the time, original Vietnam war setting. The game featured many early examples of later genre conventions such as iron sights and a cover system. In addition to the main story-driven campaign, the game also features a number of quick skirmish style missions for single player, as well as a fairly robust set of both cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, including a downloadable set of coop missions entitled "Red Dawn" played from the perspective of Vietcong soldiers.Show more

I have always remembered this game in the last 20 or so years. From those opening Jeep and Helicopter rides, to patrolling in what felt like lush & dense Jungle, hiding from snipers in rice paddies to crawling in dark tunnels, battling waves of NVA as they charge barbed wire and finally calling in an artillery strike on my own head. This was what I would consider one of the first good attempts at making an authentic and immersive tactical FPS, the type of game that tries to straddle the line between the Hollywood bombast of Call of Duty and the near clinical simulation of an Operation Flashpoint. No high tech gadgets, mini-map radars or super soldier abilities present here. One aspect I always loved was the radioman. If you wanted to call in support, check a position or get updated info you had to actually get close to your radioman and use the radio. No quick mouse clicks or hotkeys to instantly do something, no blinking dots on a map or radar to let you know where you or the enemy were. That kind of immersion gives you so much agency and makes you pay attention that you can't help but be engaged and let it imprint on your brain.

I love the sound of the jungle and walking through it, you never know when you will get ambushed. There is a lot of different missions, you will either walk alone or with your team. My favourite is the one in the tunnels. I think younger generation should know this gem and that's why it should be on gog!

This masterpiece was the best jungle experience in any FPS for a long long time. Really narrow coridors in the game feels like natural and some locations are even quite large for FPS. The sounds of the jungle, moisture everywhere and all the traps and tunnels! Vietnam war is THE war with the best soundtrack ever and this game fully shows it's power. Even the multiplayer game was alive long after the release, because it was really fun to play. (Maybe some enthusiasts still play it)

It is easily the best and most authentic singleplayer FPS set in the Vietnam War, and content-wise it has aged like fine wine. Also an official optimisation for modern systems is long overdue. Also, a third game of the franchise is badly needed.

When I was a very young boy, I didn't yet understand how video games worked. By the way, I got my first computer in 2004. It was probably in 2004 that I played Vietcong for the first time. The game presented quite a challenging experience. It really put the player to the test, enemies hiding behind bushes and trees, able to take me out with a single shot. There was a funny moment that I still remember to this day. I didn't know the game had a flashlight you could turn on by pressing the "L" key. There was this mission in underground tunnels, and it was incredibly dark. I spent hours running around trying to find the exit in the darkness. I think I even used my knife, hitting the walls to identify what was in front of me by the sound! Sometimes, I’d fire my pistol just to light up show the path for a split second.

Это лучший шутер про войну во Вьетнаме от чешской студии Pterodon в сотрудничестве с легендарной Illusion Softworks. Почему этой игры и её дополнений до сих пор нет в цифровых магазинах — не понятно.
Hands down my favorite game of this genre and era. The graphics engine is interesting, as it looks completely different from anything else of its time, but I thought that this game was simply stunning in its beauty and level design. Even then, the engine looked to be about one gen older, but the designers and artists somehow made it work, and I would not want to play it using any other engine, because this one fits it perfectly. You and your team are sent out to do missions, and you control each member of your team. This system overall works pretty well, and the odd glitch here and there only makes it more endearing. I loved this game, and would pay a good amount to be able to play it again. If my PC had an optical drive, I would try to make it work.

The best, most-atmospheric Vietnam Conflict game ever made. That it's been "lost" to the marketplace is absolute crime; a brilliant classic game. Needs to be on GOG along with its sequel!

I used to play Vietcong on my gamer uncle's computer when I was less then 10 years old and ever since I got my first computer at 18 I have come back and finished it 3 times, every few years. For me, this game is in a special league, with Project IGI and NOLF2 among others. It's possible to find it on abandonware and play with a few patches but this game deserves to be available for purchase. To this day it's still a very enjoyable shooter, slow paced and tactical, with an incredible hostile jungle atmosphere that still gives a great sense of immersion. In every mission there is something different going on, eventhough it's mostly jungle, it's still manages to get creative. I can feel that the game even respects the vietnamese resistance with various notes you find and the documents you can read in your bunker. Please GOG do something about Vietcong!
Those games also need your vote!
Freelancer
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.
