I played Max Payne 2 before ever trying the first game, so for me, Max Payne 2 is the better one. Though many fans would argue that the first game is more canonical, darker, more atmospheric true noir. And of course, it has Sam Lake’s iconic face.
The game left a huge impression on me, and I should mention that this was during the time when The Matrix was insanely popular. I’m not sure if there’s even a point in describing the game, most people already know it.
But here’s something interesting. One year, on December 31st, right before New Year’s Eve, I don’t remember the exact year, but that doesn’t matter I played through Max Payne 2 multiple times in a row. Beating the game unlocked a higher difficulty, so I kept going until I reached the hardest mode… and then I finished it again. All in a single day, on December 31st. I know a lot of people have a tradition of playing the first Max Payne on New Year’s Eve. But for me, it was always the second game.
P.S. I have to say, I absolutely love the game’s music and sound effects. Pure genius! Listen to Max’s Choice – Duty vs. Passion. Gives me chills every time.
