Yikes! On both Zork Nemesis and Grand Inquisitor, the camera pans so fast you can't see anything. Is there a way to slow this down? A solution for both games? Or a different solution for each game? Because, as it is, it just makes me dizzy and I can't figure out what I'm even supposed to be looking at.

On a related note: Playing these again reminds me just how much I love them. If the mega-fast panning issue has a resolution, I'll be very happy with my purchase. If not ... well ... at least the thought of playing them again was fun.

I seem to have the same problem, but not when I first start the game.

It occurs to me only when trying to fiddle with the option in the preferences or when alt tabing out of the game. Did it occur to you from the very start? If not, you could just leave it like that and be none the wiser.
I have the same problem. But, as nvali says, only after I have been messing around in the preferences. If I jump right in to the game it works just fine. (Grand Inquisitor)

It starts right away, in both games. Shoot ... I was hoping there would be a fix out for it. The games are sort of unplayable with the cursor moving this fast.
Are you using the dosbox version? What about slowing down the number of cycles?
Try moving the camera with the left and right keyboard keys. Yeah, it's not exactly a solution, but it is a workaround. I've noticed that the keyboard changes the view in a frame-to-frame sort of way, so it is a lot slower than the mouse.

Also, I'm talking exclusively for Grand Inquisitor.

Could you let me know how to do that? Thanks!

I found that to be even faster (someone else recommended it when I was looking for a solution). Maybe my processor is just too fast for the game. I'm hoping etb's idea works (slowing down the number of cycles), but I don't know how to do that or if would change the rest of the game, like the cinematics, etc.

Go to your game folder (Inquisitor, again) and look for the Inquis.config file.

One of the lines will say "KeyboardTurnSpeed=60". Fiddle with the number and place it lower. That might help the keyboard turning.

Thank you for the help. It didn't work (can't find a config folder on Nemesis and it won't let me save my changes on Grand Inquisitor). I wonder if maybe GOG will give a GOR (Good Old Refund) on these two titles? You sort of expect to be able to play the games you buy with real cash money.

In the installation directory is a text file called ``dosboxzorknemesis.conf'', open it with a text editor like notepad.exe, search the line ``cycles'' in the section ``[cpu]''.

It will look like (with possibly different values...):
------------------------------->
[cpu]
# core -- CPU Core used in emulation: normal,simple,dynamic,auto.
# auto switches from normal to dynamic if appropriate.
# cycles -- Amount of instructions DOSBox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this value too high results in sound dropouts and lags.
# You can also let DOSBox guess the correct value by setting it to max.
# The default setting (auto) switches to max if appropriate.
# cycleup -- Amount of cycles to increase/decrease with keycombo.
# cycledown Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.

core=auto
cycles=max
cycleup=500
cycledown=20
-------------------------------<

try changing the ``cycles=max'' with a fixed number, try starting with 6000.

Thank you for going into such detail! I followed your instructions, changed it to 6000 and now I'm back to the problem I had earlier today -- It won't let me save the file. It tells me access is denied. I've tried this while logged in as administrator, so I'm not sure why I'm getting this message in both games (Inquisitor and Nemesis).
Where did you installed? Try installing in your Documents folder.

It is the only thing I can think a part of ``why do you still use windows?''

I still use Windows because I also play a lot of MGG (Modern Good Games) that, unfortunately, don't work on any other operating system. I also use a lot of software that only works on Windows. And that question should be irrelevant, as GOG was supposed to be a place to buy old games that "just worked" on new computers. And these Zork games don't, making me still wonder if I can get a GOR (Good Old Refund).

Thanks again for your help.

That worked!

I had to set the cycles at 60000 (how fast is "MAX" anyway?), but it's panning at just the right speed now!

Could you help me with this one? The config is different for Grand Inquisitor and I'm not sure what to change to make the mouse pan slower. Here's what's in the config file:

CountryCode=0
CPU=1
JapaneseFonts=0
KeyboardTurnSpeed=60
LineSkipVideo=2
MovieCursor=0
PanaRotateSpeed=0
Platform=0
QSoundEnabled=1
ShowSubtitles=1
VenusEnabled=1
Win958=0
InstallLevel=1
HighQuality=1
NoAnimWhileTurning=0

KeyboardTurnSpeed does nothing for the mouse speed, obviously.

Regardless, thank you for helping me solve the Nemesis problem! Once GI is figured out, this thread can be marked as "solved!"

EDIT: Despite not changing anything, the game suddenly won't play at all. DOXBox boots up and then turns off and sends me back to Windows. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!! I was really having fun with this game, finally getting the mouse to work right. Maybe Windows DOES suck.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED? Dosbox opens up, a black screen appears and it closes again. I uninstalled Nemesis and redownloaded and reinstalled it and the same problem. What happened? I've went from mildly frustrated to ENTIRELY ANGRY. And no, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry!
