I can't give any comparison to Sid's Pirates! as I haven't played it, but I can confirm that the Single Player is very much playable.
Personally, I think the game opens up a lot more in MP, with interactions during instances and general play providing unique (and quite hilarious) experiences, but the game can definitely be enjoyed in Single Player.
