sh4dow83: Lady_Salvia helped me solve it via PM, so I marked her last post here as the solution.

Just in case somebody else has issues with this... actually, that shape IS that machine to the right that triggers the ending if you haven't talked to the sentients before. But once you DO get that vizualizer image right, something different happens. Instead of triggering the ending, it only continues the conversation with them!
Leading to a much more satisfying ending :)

Not sure what you are refering to.

Here's the order I did things:

1) Talk to the sentients

2) Recover OCTO

3) Head toward the base where I have to make a decision between continuing or going back

4) Go back to the cave, go to the sentients and activate the machine on the right.

*Cutscene where the complex goes above ground*

5) Then, I'm back in the cave and the sentients are on my right inside the cave, but I don't talk to them (am I supposed to?). The map key doesn't function anymore.

6) I continue on the right, exit the cave and go back to base.

*Hug cutscene and credits roll*
@ Magnitus:

Yes, that's the rushed ending that I found unsatisfying. Or did you feel like you ever really "talked" to the sentients?
From the way you describe it, you probably only solved that first visualizer image and that's it. But... that's not it by a long shot.

@ Leroux:

Actually, it sounds to me like yet another one. Because in your thread, you talk about seeing the same cutscene three times but different things following it.

To make things short... just watch the beginning of the following video if you don't want to spoil too much for yourself while still seeing more of what I described:

I didn't want to give away too much, so I remained vague in my description, but I guess it was open to misinterpretation when I wrote about "the" cutscene. Actually I was referring to two different ones: one cutscene for ending 1, the other one for endings 2 & 3 (looks like the one you linked me to is ending 3, the one I found most satisfying, too, due to the way it was presented, compared to the other two, silent endings).
