Witcher 3 next-gen - after update I can't run game :(
I have installed many mods - including graphics mods.

What I should do in this situation?
Should I reinstall whole game? What with saves?

Not for nuthin but I'm running a laptop with a 3050TI and yesterday it was running great (1080p) but is now choppy. The BIGGEST piss off was that I'm one of those freaks that uses the direction keys right handed vs the WASD and this new update completely unwound my custom key bindings...what a piss off!

UPDATE - just tried/found the DX11 executable and it's more or less back to normal in terms of performance...but had to remap all of my keys :-(

It seems to be the dx12 to dx11 wrapper. Use the original dx11 client and it gets more stable. The RT and DLSS is not reacting well to the Red Engine as it is.

All right it was going fine "until" I edited the general.ini file "DBGConsoleOn=true". Then it crashed on loading saves. After deleting the "DBGConsoleOn=true" from the ini file it still crashed on loading saves.

I verified the files, some files updated to the right time. And it worked loading an old save up to v4.0 saves.

Added the debug again and it crashed. Removed it.

Re-verified the files downloaded some more still crashed even though there were.

Solution going back to 1.32 and waiting for CDPR to fix it.

I use "DBGConsoleOn=true" because I want to. After 7,000 hours plus I enjoy being a tourist in the game. It's a holiday I can afford. The ability to have fine weather is the one I like the most. Gloomy rain, I get more than I want in real life. Stuffed if I want it in my fantasy.

I've notice bottom left just after getting to the load saved game screen there is a "logged" in message coming up. I'm presuming it's the cloud save for cross-platform games.
As I've just fired up 1.32 and loaded my 1.22 save game. No "logged" in message comes up.

A shame the cloud saves don't work. My end the message like "heavy load" is perpetual. Has been for ages.

With RT all enabled? I doubt it. I have a RTX 3080 and as soon as a enable RT my FPS drops from 100 to 55 while still in the options menu. This is without even enabling all the separate RT options.

Same. got to vizima and crashed. now i cant play anymore

Verify installation first. See pic. I've verified twice theses files changed time stamps both times.

I started a new game. 3 hours continuous play no problems. Saves reload ok.

I've edited the General.ini file.

My conclusion for "My" problems, is old saves may or may not work depending on how the games feeling. :-)

( ConfigVersion=2 seemed to make it more stable. But could be an optical illusion. Haven't tested it by putting the old one back. )

Starting a new game, it seems to be fine. Saving and loading its own saves.

Loaded a 1.32 version save then saved it as ver 4.0 and re-loaded it.

No problems this time. Carried on playing after the first part of this post for several hours. Only problem I had was "Devil by the Well" wouldn't finish with all quest parts done. Kiled it but couldn't find it. Yep weird. Quest did close though after seeing "Odolan". So, Mandy will have her dowery. :-) (I think that's her name?)

Currently satisfied enough to zip it to another drive.

Yeah, my cinematics don't play, then in game there is a lag spike/freeze that is as regular as a heartbeat, turning off RT shadows decreases the time the spike freezes the game, but it doesn't eliminate it. i have 96 gigs of ram, a 3070Ti and a 5950x, and the game plays like GN reviewing an arc GPU. they should have delayed it again, not done this poop on xmas pr stunt.

Something similar here, movement wise. Push the forward key "W". Geralt has a smoke and a think before moving off. About a second.

Long enough to be annoying. Not bad enough to stop playing.

Apart from that so far now after my other changes it seem fine.

The Whie Orchard Crypt has better lighting in it now. No need for a torch.

I'm peeved with the change in slots. to two and a mask. CDPR you can shove that. I had no problems putting on a mask in 1.32. Either Tesham Mutna mask or the wolf mask with Triss. Typical chairwarmer decisions to justify their pay. Change for the sake of looking like they did something.

Haven't played it enough to find others if any.

I wonder if that is part of the crashing problems? A place I do normally have something in, has no place for it anymore.

Dito. Played the original at 60 FPS in 1080p.

Maybe some crazy setting is causing this? Raytracing On would for sure not run on my GTX 970.

What I thought isn't the problem. Or I'm really good at getting the game to crash.

The game starts no problems. No need to verify, as I wrote yesterday. Nothing to do with the General.ini. Although I haven't reverted it back yet. Still using the 1.32 one. And it crashed when I changed it in "Completes general.ini", coincidence?


Loading an old save game is hit or miss.

When it crashes, I lose my mouse or response is slowed right down? It eventually comes back if I alt/Tab to another program/explorer window.

Restart the game and it starts fine.

I've emptied the slots "complete" totally changes. (Chairwarmers strike again. Wish they'd just go for a walk.) Same thing it'll load sometimes not others.

Tried new start 3 times no trouble on any of them. And the ones I did yesterday were also fine.

Think I got about 3 hours yesterday from a new start no trouble at all.

Crashed a couple of times today loading my 1.32 save. Eventually settled and I'm playing it now.

So, bottom line I don't have a clue why.

Wonder if it's a feature? Like Windows used to do?

I've decided to solve the problem my way. To get over the frustration.



Gone back to v1.32.

I'll check back in a month or so.

Maybe, it'll be sorted? Maybe it won't?

Maybe they'll fire the chair warmers who changed the loadout slots. And put the old ones back.
Might even fix the delay in movement?

first day of update - game crashed all the time.

After that:

1. I have completly uninstalled witcher3 game , graphics card driver, delated witcher3 savegames from my HD documents folder (left only those in cloud)
2. Deleted all mods installed - double checked that relevant folders does not exists anymore in "empty" witcher3 folder
3. Installed witcher 3 and update 4.0 again, graphic card driver reinstalled again
4. Started game thru Gforce experience settings with recommended settings. RT and AA - off.
5. Created a new game. Saved.
6. Then loaded one of old saved games from cloud and slowly turned all graphics options on.

No crashes so far. Just note that top graphics settings with RT ON are too demandig for RTX 4080 in 1440p :D.
But maybe my old i5 and motherboard are a bottleneck there.

Similiar case here. I have 3700X + 3070. On DX12 in Novigrad it runs ~40 fps. On DX11 I have at least 70-80 fps. If you don't care about RT, just play it on DirectX 11.

Unfortunately, CDPR didn't optimized game for AMD Ryzen processors. Results on Intel equivalent runs about 30% smoother, than on AMD. From my perspective this is a huge downgrade in terms of fps and optimization. On above setting with RT (DX12) on, I have in Novigrad ~30 fps. The game is on SSD disc.
