Hi, hope someone can help me! When I try to play gwent, I always get the message that I dont have enough unit cards. I have found others who had the same problem, but the answers does not help me. I have 17 unit cards. You have to have 22 right? I have bought all cards available from innkeepers and merchants ( found a list of them and went through this) . Have I missed some toutorial where I could win a card. I cannot winn any cards since I cannot play at all. What to doooooooo???!!

Correct. That is the rule. You *must* have 22 cards from a faction in your playing hand, as opposed to your stack hand, to be able to play. The game gives you 23 cards from the Northern Realms right at the start of the game, so that you can proceed with your Gwent quests. You must find, buy or win any other cards. Speak to innkeepers and shopkeepers, and do any Gwent quests made available.

I'm guessing right now because I don't remember - wasn't the initial set of cards given to Geralt when he played Gwint for the very first time with sciencist (Gwint tutorial) - in White Orchard Inn? I think it must be done before finalizing final quest on that map because it is not possible to meet that sciencist later.

Thats weird that I only got 17 then. I have been to every merchant. SOme guy made a list with all the merchant that sells cards. I guess I am not able to play Gwent :-( Too bad. I canot do any Gwent quest beacuse I get the message that I dont have enough unit cards so I am kind of stuck,. But thank you for your reply.

Which Cards do you have in your decks? The Northern Realms Deck should have at least enough Cards for playing from the tutorial.

It will take quote some time to get enough Cards for the other decks.

See the attached image for which cards you start the game with. You have the option to gain more cards in White Orchard, 5 from the innkeeper and 1 (Zoltan) from the scholar inside the inn.

Could it be that you have the cards, and have not put them in your playing hand?
If you press the H key now (not when trying to play) Do you have cards on the left you can move to the right (your playing hand)?
If you have cards on the left, doubleclick on them to move them into your playing hand.

From the OP's description, it really does sound like he did not play the scholar in the inn at White Orchard at the beginning of the game. So, he did not receive the basic deck.

If he did get the basic deck, then just follow the hints given above by olnorton to ensure the cards are in your hand.

I, too have a Gwent problem.

You do not need to play the scholar in White Orchard to get the basic deck. He is there to introduce the player to Gwent, but only gives you the Zoltan card -- if you don't accept the tutorial from him, you are given a book instead. The basic deck is given to you at the very start of Lilac and Goosberries, before you ever talk to Aldert Geert. See attached images (cropped for forum size).

Well, partially true - but it has nothing to do with Lilac and Gooseberries. You actually get the starting deck the first time you play anyone (which is typically the scholar) - or the first time you buy / receive a gwent card. One can go a long way in the story without the basic deck - because you don't get it automatically. You only get it when you play for the first time or whenever you get your first Gwent card.

Wrong. You get the deck at the start of the game, like I said. You do not need to buy a card nor play a game. Just open up your Gwent deck from the menu, and you will see.

You should test that theory of yours with a fresh start. Not NG+, obviously.

See the first image here? Those were taken on a fresh start. I had spoken to nobody except Vesemir, bought nothing. Just opened up the Gwent deck. It is not a theory.

go around buy cards, play with this guys on the map,
you get better cards, than play with stronger players and do gwent quests.

Once you are in Velen go to heart of stone part of the map,
the wind mill with two black rune merchants, you can buy nice cards there with some leaders,

also go at caravan near big mansion where you go to party mission with triss,
guy there sell good cards and play him as well. That way you got very strong cards, gunter of darkness and nice leaders for every deck.

Also party location with ghost and medic red head shani girl,
in the barn on the leaders there is cow card, strong card as well.

On a new game - not NG+ - you get your basic Gwent deck when you play your first Gwent game or buy/receive a Gwent card. Until that time you will have no deck and no listing for a Gwent deck in your menu.

Until one of those actions happens in your game - you will not have a basic deck. It does not happen automatically at the beginning of the game in White Orchard or any other area. You have to initiate it.
