The game save I used above was, as I said, before speaking to anybody, but I forgot -- the save is from way back in April -- that the cut scene when you enter the inn in White Orchard includes interaction with the tavern keep, so in mitigation I didn't recall buying cards during that scene. You are right; my bad.
