Aughard: Xonair sound card owners can drop their channels down to 6 to get sound working again. Not sure if you G35 owners can do the same.
Nope, G35 are stuck with the 7.1 drive. Had to stop playing because i hated the default win drivers.

But i got something sweet on route next week, Xonar Xense and a sennheiser headset!. xD
I had this issue with a Creative X-Fi sound card. I was able to fix it by going to Control Panel -> Sound and then disabling every device listed except for the output that I wanted the game to use (specifically, I disabled the "SPDIF" output). It seems like maybe the game defaults to the wrong output device (or perhaps just an arbitrary one) if multiple options are available on the system.
i was able to go into the control panel and unselect the 2 side speakers and it then worked fine. i have the g930.
control panel, speakers, then i selected my set and hit "configure" . That took me to a set up i could test everythign, then hit "next" and it had the speakers listed i could use. I deselected the "side pair" . everything has worked fine for it after.

This is NOT a G35 related issue! Since it happens also on physical cards like the Xi-Fi, or to me with Razer Megalodon.

I was playing wonderfully in 7.1 with my Razer Megalodon, went to lunch shutting off everything, came back and the voiceovers sounds are totally gone, plus since the Megalodon don't need any drivers at all, there's no way for me to force 5.1, it automatically goes to 7.1..

I am needing a real fix ASAP, my free time is already limited due to work and this completely screwed the game up for me :/
I encountered this same problem with my X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional card in a 7.1 speaker configuration. It only started today after the MS update (KB2467173) that I did last night. Loaded up a save this morning and the ambient sounds and speech had vanished, but other sounds were okay. Tried switching sound setup to 2 speakers and lost all sound, even music, in game (outside of the game, all speakers work as they should). Trying some other suggestions mentioned earlier to see if they will work.

Hmm, even switching to 5.1 doesn't work (which is listed as one of the fixes). Not sure what else is left to try; may have to shelve the game until patched.

Some definite oddness. I tried everything else I could think of that might work to get the sound working correctly again (disabling extra sound devices, changing sound settings, etc), but none worked. However, I started a new game and the voices were back! I loaded up my last save in my current game and the voices worked there, too. I thought things were back to normal but I soon discovered that while voices were back, ambient sounds were not.

I can't seem to figure out the one thing that'll bring it all back. It appears random.

Yep, besides that crazyness, I tried loading older savegames (not starting a new one), and while in those EVERY sound works JUST FINE I've found out from which savegame that "sound error" kicked in, luckly it was just 10 minutes of game time before my last save! Now I'm going to try continuing from there (it's somewhere in the act 1 won't say where, due to spoilers), from that save, and hoping it won't trigger anymore

Hmm. That might be a good thing to try. I have lots of saves and I didn't do much since the point the problem started to occur (since I was troubleshooting). If it's specific to a save that would be easier to work around. I know exactly when it started, too.

[Edit] Attempting to load a previous save didn't seem to work; no voices or ambient sounds were working. However, I loaded up a save that I made during my last testing (the one with voices but no ambient sounds) and now all sounds are working again. Random indeed! I don't know if it'll continue to work, but we'll see.

It's unfortunate that I didn't figure out a solution or workaround in all this. Considering that there wasn't any difference in anything technical (settings, drivers, etc) between any of the last tests, it does suggest something particular about the saves, perhaps the area they are in or what is happening at the time of the save. Will have to watch for it happening again.

Thing is certain, after reloading that save, I went up ahead into the start of Chapter 2 with everything working as intended.. so my guess about how it might happen is really vague, since it happened all of a suden!
Anyone with a G35 tried this solution with Windows XP and onboard sound?:

http://forums.logitech.com/t5/PC-Gaming/The-Witcher-2-G35-FIX-without-uninstalling-Logitech-drivers/td-p/624220

I cannot for the life of me figure out what settings to enter and what not..

The instructions are fairly straightforward, so I guess the first question is, do you even have another soundcard?

Because I'd think if you did, it would mostly make the entire purpose of that thread moot, since you could simply use that card instead. ;)
Yeah i got onboard SoundMAX and a Creative XI-FI Audio.

Problem is the only headset i got laying around is a G35, so that removes Creative.
I tried setting all options to the SoundMAX (onboard) but nothing happens, it detects the device but zero sound.

He mention "Listen to this device, and choose the G35 Headset", which i cant find anywhere on the windows xp sound area, stuff. Actually alot of what he mention dosnt appear to have the same function in Win XP, like i cant right click anything in the options ect.

So im baffled, plus tinkering with this stuff isnt really my strong point. =)

Ah, that explains why you'd want to do what he outlines. Sadly, it's been many, many years since I've used XP, so I couldn't even pretend to remember what the audio options were like in that version of Windows.

That said, all it's doing is streaming the sound in stereo to your G35, which is functionally no different than you removing your G35 drivers and installing generic windows drivers. All it's really doing is letting you skip rebooting your computer if you want to access 7.1 sound in other applications. Which, I suppose is a draw, in of itself, but I thought I'd make it clear that the sound wasn't going to be any different.
Yeah, i just find removing G35 drivers to be a horrible fix. I quite like the features for everything outside TW2.

Ah well, gues ill go out and buy a really cheap headset tomorrow and just use creative audio. That way i can play TW2 with creative and G35 everything else. Atleast for awhile. ^_^
CD Projekt has now said the first patch won't fix the G35 issue, but the second will. It's due next week.
