Peetz: I think you're pretty much SOL, anyway - as noted in a few posts above. You better go back to an earlier save before the little kerfuffle at the Elven Ruins, because you will not be able to complete the side quests after that point.

Act1 is designed so that the side quests should be completed before the main quest gets too far (as in, Flotsam burned down is too far).
I managed to turn in the Nekker contract as the guy is still there.
So just a matter of figuring out the others without documentation. Shouldn't be too tough but I still think the journal is broken.
The Journal entries are gained by reading books,

however by killing monsters you also gain knowlege throguh the character screen, where talents are selected, there are 3 other screens from there.

One is buffs and stats showing what is effecting Geralt
Another shows the sort of "Perks" you have gained
Then their is the monster knowledge part, which goes 1/3, 2/3 or 3/3 depending on your experiances with that monster, as well as how to kill them etc.

I can appreciate that but it seems to work totally different to the characters section in journal. Characters appear there straight away when you first make contact with them.

The same logic did not carry over to the monster section. They could have at least made the monster visible in the journal on first contact and as you learn more about it, just add entries / info

Since we're discussing the presence of monster entries in the journal: Has anyone discovered whether it actually changes anything to have them or not?

In TW1, there were alchemical (and quest) ingredients that you could not harvest from a monster corpse unless you had the necessary journal entry. Here, though, that seems not to be the case?

In short: Is there any advantage to trying to read up on the monsters you're likely to meet?

As far as I know, there are 2 gameplay advantages:
a) You learn how to destroy nests to complete monster contracts.
b) In select cases, you learn about their weaknesses (not the boss, mini-boss monsters though)
And you also read then for the lore. But no extra alchemy ingredients this time.
Looks like the library is intact after the fire after all. So is the quest guy, so all good.

Would still like CDP to re-consider the monster journal logic though :-)
The monster section in the character screen should be removed totally and combined with the journal. It's just out of place and hidden there I think.

Geralt recovered most of his memory so he doesn't need to read the books to learn which part to extract :P
