you can install my translations over it, available from the ubi forums to convert it to English, if that is what you want.

If you're still around here: I reinstalled the game again (new rig), using your files. Had to change the value in the registry myself for some reason but other than that it went well. Except that the options in the game aren't in English. I'm sure they were before. Any idea how to fix that?
Hi pangaea,

yeah ofc I'm still around ;)

I'm not quite sure what happened there that made you get the result you got...
I suppose with the options you mean the text you get in the game when it says 'flag blocked' and those other messages?

maybe it just needs the register set back to english? maybe install the separate english files over it again ?

be sure to follow the procedure outlined in the ubi forums, either the 5-step one should work, or if you have a non german version of vikings use the 11-step manual procedure with the correct language code ofcourse:

Good to see you are still around, you're the expert on this wonderful game :)

The messages in-game seem to be okay (I've not really played though, just a few quick test-runs), but what I meant were the menus when starting a new game, exiting the game, and such. These are still in German for some reason, like "Speel Beenden", "Kampagne" or something along those lines.

I only had the 1.1 English file so did that first, then saw a 1.2 file and did that on top. It didn't install at first, but when I changed the regedit-ed file (to 1031 IIRC) it went through. Also downloaded a file from that ubi thread about title screens, but it didn't make any impact, and in any case was already included in the files you made. Suppose I have to redo the whole installation process again and hope it goes better. I am sure these 'buttons' in-game were in English before, and it would be more comfortable to get it that way again.
Redid the whole procedure again, and it still didn't work. However, I found out what was wrong. Didn't think it was necessary to copy over the contents from the backed up language folder with this new English 1.2 file, so after I did that, the menus were back to English. Good stuff :)

Mousewheel zooming seems to have gone out the window since the update (?) to Win 7, but that's a small niggle really, as I mostly play it way zoomed out anyway, so PgUp/Down will have to do.
Ahhh good you found it!

for me the wheel still seems to work normally? i'm on w7x64 with all updates and corsair gaming mouse, so I'm guessing something else is going on than just the w7 updates.

anyway, at least you can play now, so good job :)

did you know that if you set a 4:3 resolution in the game it shows a larger area when zoomed out, than it does in wide screen resolutions? can be nice if you like playing zoomed out on a 27", but you might get side-bars...

happy gaming!

disi: The disk arrived and I installed it yesterday.

I am not sure if I am allowed to post what I did to get it working :)

This is for a German installation.

I applied the German patches from Oedi to the game:
http://www.gog.com/forum/the_settlers_series/german_language_patches_for_all_settlers_games

The installer for the Viking Addon said the installation language is not compatible.

Search the registry for the string "S2TNG". It should be in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft...

The English value: 1033
The German value: 1031

Change it to German and there is no point changing it back, there is no difference at all.
Install the Viking AddOn and be happy.

I also replaced the executeable, which is exchanged with the one from the Vikings AddOn and will now ask for the CD to be inserted (SecureROM protection), with a cracked one for German version 1.1. This way I can play without a disk inserted.

Mind you, I live in Europe and people are allowed to do whatever it takes to use the content they bought, even reverse-engineering. Good examples are DVD and Bluray encryption, which are now easier to play on Linux than Windows OS. There are other countries with more strict copyright laws :)
I did all of your steps - But after i installed vikings addon, and use the crack file in there, the game just shows me a black screen, and then it shuts down.

I got no idea on what to do to get this game working. Any ideas? :o)
Since the Ubisoft forum is closed, the links to the Vikings add-on installer is not available anymore.

Is there another way to find the addon + installation gide for the english version?
Search for "Siedler 2 Gold" on kleinanzeigen.de
This is a bundle of "Die Siedler II: 10th Anniversary" with the Vikings extension.
Alternatively search for "Siedler Wikinger", but the installation will be more difficult.
