I posted this in the comments thread for the Overseer news item, but I guess nobody reads that anymore, so here we go:
Hi. I apologize for falling of the grid completely, but I have three jobs and a lot of other stuff taking up my time:P
But to the point, I have finally managed to make the dvd version run pretty flawlessly and made a new updated dvd from my work. Midi is still not fixed though, and I had to discard the no cd patch available online as it made the dvd version crash. However, I can play it by mounting the dvd image in daemon tools and I must say it works pretty darn well:)
Basically what I've done is:
-convert all the video files to mpeg1
-update the game to v1.04
-set the processor affinity for Overseer.exe to run on a single cpu.
-twiddled with the settings in the configuration files somewhat
-the only thing you have to install now is RTX audio, the DVD Express Player is no longer needed, but you still have to configure the game to use it as none of the other decoder options function correctly.
Also note that I have actually improved video quality by deinterlacing the video and applying various filters. I'm pretty happy with it:)
Basically, all gog would have to do to make this work is to make their own working no cd patch for the dvd version. So gog team, please contact me if you need any assistance. I know there is interest in the community for this, but your lack of interest in our progress so far has been somewhat disconcerting:P
I made my modified version from the original dvd and am running the game on a new iMac with Windows XP through BootCamp for those interested:)

good work
thanks:) I would have never thought of using mpeg1 if it wasn't for you though, so kudos;)

over the years I have had used elcard decoder with the dvd express software, overseer config is set as dvd express but using elcard as the mpeg 2 decoder
I'm currently playtesting and so far the only problem I have encountered is the old bug in the Anasazi ruins, which can be kind of a bitch to get by, but I managed it. I haven't seen that bug reported on here however, it would be interesting to hear if any of you who bought the gog version have experienced this? Or has the gog team found some miraculous way to solve it?

yes that happens with the original dvd version but the original cd version doesn't have that problem. the only problem I have seen reported from gog users is crashes at alcatraz but I think they are too close to the cell walls as the game does crash when you do that.
it's a shame you can't just put the mpeg video into the cd version.
I always play the cd version & use the hd/dvd installer, no crashes at all.
with the original dvd version, we had to change the config setup from decoder hardware to software to get through the ruins.
So from this do I assume that the Overseer version offered on GOG is the CD-ROM version and no the DVD version?
I wish I knew this sooner. When I played through it I simply restarted the game after every FMV cutscene.

Yes and it's not surprising. I bought Overseer shortly after release because I already had a DVD drive and the game came with both DVD and CD version (the DVD version having MPEG2 video which is of a lot better quality). Even back then it was a massive headache to get it working because the software included didn't do the job. The game was designed back when the DVD players contained the MPEG2 decoder instead of the software. I recall you even had to pick a DVD brand from a list to get it to work and it still didn't because my DVD player wasn't on there and needed software.
With some luck I managed to get it going but it was pretty buggy with glitches left and right and it was very crash prone. Too bad since the quality was a lot better.

Yeah, I also have the DVD/CD version from when the game first came out. I was actually able to get it to play up until close to the end of game when it would continually crash at the same place - I gave up (now wish I hadn't) and was hoping GOG had the DVD version packaged where it would actually play. Guess if I ever get back around to it again I'll try making my disk work...

Any chance you can... uh... share your work? I have the DVD version, but it's a pain in the arse to get it to work on xp. Or, can what you did be done fairly easily?
Hello.
I'm afraid I can't make the game publicly available as that would constitute software piracy.
The process is doable, but timeconsuming(in regards to converting the video files) and requires an intermediate level of technical know how. In other words, you don't have to be a programmer or computer wiz, but it would be useful to know your way around an operating system and how it works technically.
I have recently switched to windows 7 and haven't gotten a chance to try out the DVD version on it yet. I might give it a go later this week and try to write a more detailed how-to and post it here.
I'm sorry that I can't be of more help at the moment, I had hoped that GOG would release the unstable dvd version at least as an alternate download, but it seems we have no such luck. Either way, the most important tasks you can get started on is converting all the video vob files to mpeg1 and figure out how to use imagecfg.exe to set the processor affinity to 1.

Good luck.

I understand. I'm no whiz, but I'm pretty much comfortable with time consuming processes and I enjoy tinkering enough to give it a whirl on my own. Any chance then, that you could start me in the right direction, as in what tools you used to do what, and if possible, somewhat step by step. I don't think I need to be 100% walked through the process but if you could nudge me in the right direction, I'd be a happy man!
Even, if you can recommend an encoder to convert the files to mpeg1
Hi. Sorry I haven't replied earlier but my work is keeping me occupied for the most of my days. I'm currently putting together a package containing all the software and codecs needed for you and others who want to convert their Overseer DVD. I found that I had deleted my old converter videos at some point and am now reencodng them all again, making batchlists in the process to make the rask easier for others. I will upload it some time during the weekend when I have confirmed that everything works.
Thank you fo your patience.
