Already mentioned that a few times, and you can *probably* just use GOG's ToEE.exe with Atari Patch 2 or 3, since the regular ToEE.exe file is the same in both. In fact, GOG's ToEE.exe *is* a NoCD crack, but the game is pretty much in temple.dll. I'm not sure why yours is hanging, but I also detailed in this thread what I could see GOG's ToEE version as:
Atari Patch 3 + moebius2778's unofficial ToEE patch + "Hans Schulze" NoCD for v3. Installing Atari Patch 2 and activating the Co8 modpack *ought* to be OK from what I could tell.

Some people mentioned video antialiasing in relation to crashes I think, which should be modifiable from the config file, I believe.

I am trying to run the TFE-X Application as admin but I get an error saying I must run it from the root folder. I stuck the circle of 8 folder in the TOEE main folder already....
Have you tried reinstalling and seeing if the problem persist?

You're on Vista or Win7? On a lark, what if you copy your ToEE install into your documents folder and then try to install the Co8 patch there? It could be the program files folder protection interfering.

This just happened to me. I had the game up and running yesterday, with the co8 modpack. Now I come back to it today and I'm getting this same error when I try to run TFE-X.

What could have possibly changed between yesterday and today?

Edit: And my install is not in Program Files (none of my games are).

Edit 2: Whoa....so I'm looking in my file and my TOEE.exe isn't there anymore. WTF? I know I didn't delete/move it.

Edit 3: So it looks like Windows Defender got a hold of it thinking it was a virus. Disregard silly old me :P

tnoyce: Hmm.. I've had some issues with it running well, even on patch 2. Things seem to work ok when I first apply it, and start a new game. After that, it seems that if I physically close down TOEE and restart it, it will lock up at some arbitrary point quickly after the main options screen appears.
Running modded TOEE not from the mod launcher may mess up your game. You sure you haven't done just that?

I've tried installing to my documents and I'm still getting the same error. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Just going by the latest Co8 install instructions:
STEP 4:

DO NOT INSTALL ATARI PATCH 3

You SHOULD NOT install Atari's patch 3, since it's not compatible with this mod. The only additional feature patch 3 contains anyway is a fix for the infamous DirectX 9.0c looting bug. But this particular issue is also addressed by the Co8 modpack. If you have installed patch 3 already and want to get rid of it, just install patch 2 overtop of it.

That's what I've been trying to tell people, although some keep saying it works anyway. I'm repeating myself, but using the GOG version as a base to install Atari patch 2 and the Co8 modpack over should be OK - just make a backup of your ToEE.exe to run the game with. If you don't install Atari patch 2, then you'll be running with patch 3 versions of tio.dll and pyToEE22.dll, which *could* cause problems - who knows but why bother taking that chance.

How about someone posts those two files for people to update with? Sounds like a win-win.

Alright, since there is a lot of conflicting and/or misleading information flying around in here, let me try to clear some of it up.

First, as someone stated earlier, it does indeed seem that this GOG version of ToEE includes Atari Patch 1 & 2.

Second, if your .Net is up to date, you can go straight ahead and install the Co8 mod pack/Front End-X and play.

There are no other patches that you need to install, and indeed, according to Co8, anything else is likely to adversely affect your install.

I guess maybe it is just not clear to me what I am suppose to do. By putting it in the root folder you mean to just stick it in the main ToEE folder right?

Then try to run the Co8 TFE-X application?

I get that message that says I must run from the root folder and if I am running from the root folder make sure I have patch 2.

Does the game come with patch 2 already or not?
Here is my experience getting it to successfully work. I got started on my own before this thread was around, and went through a lot of experimentation to finally get the modpack to activate.

First off, I'm using CXG 9.1, but I think my process might be relevant to everybody based on what I've seen in this forum.

My first attempt was to go exactly by the Co8 team's instructions. I made a copy of my TOEE.exe. Next, I had to do the registry editing trick to get Patch 1 and Patch 2 to install. I restored my TOEE.exe. Then, I installed the .NET framework. Finally, I attempted the Co8 install. Got a couple of errors that allowed me the option of ignoring, so I did and continued. Didn't work.

Tried all that again, but without replacing the TOEE.exe, just to see. Got an error saying that no cd was detected. That confirms what others were saying about the no-cd crack.

Did it all once more without installing Patch 1 and Patch 2, making sure to have not only the .NET framework, but other things automatically installable by CXG, including but not limited to the core font library and C++ redistributable. Anything that looked like it could possibly support the tools in the Co8 mod, just to be safe. Whether or not that was necessary, I sort of doubt it, but anybody using CXG who wants to emulate exactly what I did, there ya go. And if you aren't using CXG, then you don't care anyway.

Anyway, that third attempt where I did NOT install Patch 1 and Patch 2 is the time when it all worked out. I did get a single error near the end with the option to ignore and continue, which I did, but it looks good right now. The modpack was able to activate after a couple of minutes. Based on the vague warning from the Co8 people, there might be issues down the road, but that's only true of the part of the regular Atari Patch 3 thing that they were concerned about made it into the GOG version, which apparently is different. So yes, I realize that the Co8 official instructions say to install Patch 1 and 2, but from my experiment, I have concluded that it is better NOT to do so for the GOG version of the same.

I hope this helps everybody out.

tl;dr: Install the GOG version like normal, and then immediately install the modpack. Don't install Atari Patch 1 or 2.

I never installed the >Net framework. Guess I'll give that a try....
What I did, start to finish, to get ToEE and Co8 pack running:

1) Download and Install ToEE. Sounds simply, but I had Norton interfere with both the installation and when I tried to launch the game. If you use Norton, create an exception for both the GOG setup file and the entire ToEE folder.

2) Download the latest Co8 Pack (5.9.2 found here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/circle-of-eight-modpack).

3) I didn't have to install the .Net Framework 2.0 (I was already up-to-date) but you may have to do this.

4) Extract the contents of the mod pack into your ToEE root directory. If you are using Windows 7 and have install ToEE into program files, you may need to extract the mod pack into a directory outside of /program files/ and then copy and paste into the root directory. The root directory is the folder containing the toee.exe file. In my case, it's "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Temple of Elemental Evil"

5) Load the mod. Launch TFE-X as an Administrator. In the list at the top of the app, highlight Circle of Eight Mod pack and select Activate. The Front-End will take 4 or 5 minutes, and prompt you a couple times to hit 'OK.'

6)When TFE-X finishes, hit the play button. Enjoy your game!**]

**I can't seem to get the game to load without launching it from within the Front-End. I'm not sure if that's just me or an issue with the mod. Either way, with a shortcut for the Front-End on my desktop, it is no longer an issue.

Hope that helped!
