For a game that's selling point is it's story, it certainly seemed lacking.

The dialogue was stiff and flippant even during serious moments, the pacing slow, and the structure... well, it had a beginning and a middle, I suppose.

They often hinted at a connection between the two plotlines, and it would have been cool if the Prague detective's story actually influenced the modern story in some way. In the end, it seemed as if it was shipped before it was done, as if the developers had a good idea, but not enough time to actually tie the story together in a believable way.... like we are missing the last few chapters.

In terms of gameplay, even as a linear adventure, the steps from A to B often felt illogical. It was hard to watch that wonky run animation. Dialogue offered no choice, just left click a bunch of times, right click a bunch of times.

The highlight for me was (and I'm probably the only person to say this) was the lockpick puzzle, which was challenging for sure, but seemed relevant to the story. I felt accomplished when the door finally opened.

The killer... they approach this with the subtlety of a 2x4. I looked it up to see if I was right, and saw some scenes from SL2. Even after having to wait for another game to get the real ending... not worth it.

Stick with the Longest Journey or Space Quest. :)
I remember playing Still Life for the first time. And then, playing Post Mortem. This changed my view on the identity of the murderer.

Unfortunately, I still haven't played SL2. GOG, please get it as soon as possible. It would also be nice to have Post Mortem on my virtual shelf :)
See the thing is, you're right, there were a lot of problems with the story and such, but there were certain things about it that seemed to just suck you in. The whole art aspect I really liked and then there was just this urge to continue to find out what was going to happen next, it almost reminded me of a thriller you might see on TV, maybe it wasn't the best writing or the best acting but it kept you watching and after you finished you may never feel like watching/playing it again, but it was enjoyable to play through/watch the first time. I actually just got Longest Journey and look forward to playing through it next. Would love to play through Still Life 2 though, even if it isn't that great if it still has that addictive, keep you wanting to find out what happens next then I'll probably still enjoy it.
At least they finished Post Mortem/Still Life -trilogy and gave the story a conclusion. Both Space Quest and The Longest Journey -series end to unresolved cliffhangers. But it's true that Still Life 1 has a rushed ending, because they had to make the game shorter than they originally planned. Despite that flaw I find it enjoyable game with decent puzzles and interesting characters.
