My 360 controller worked right away without any external calibration on Win7 64-bit. While the game was erratic/playing too fast, a quick change in the compatibility settings and it seems to be working like a charm now (of course with the exception of the slower main menus with that change used).

bigman38: Found a solution for the controller issue that is working for me.

- Copy and paste the entire Star Wars - Rogue Squadron 3D folder to your desktop. Do a search to find if needed.
- Open the folder "Star Wars - Rogue Squadron 3D>Rogue", right click the Rogue Squadron Application
- Select Properties and go to the compatibility tab
- Under Compatibility mode make sure the check box is checked and select "Windows 98/Windows Me" from the dropdown

- Open the game, the menus are very slow but that goes away once you start playing
- Go to the settings and the Joystick section
- Click Defaults, all of the controls automatically mapped for me

This worked for me on Windows 8 with a wired 360 controller. Hope this helps some of you.
Another confirmation that this works with a wired Xbox One controller on Win 8.1 x64. Cheers, mate!

OK, now the menu recognises the joystick axis but won't recognise any button other than the A button. When I start the game the joystick doesn't work at all.

I still can't play it.

Tried it on win98/ME and win95 compatibility.

Worked for me too - kudos points for this workaround!
Hopefully GOG will look into this and fix it so we get normal speed menu's too ;)

This partially fixed it for me. I can now set the various axes of the wired 360 controller I have, but as soon as I click on any of the buttons to set them, it automatically sets it to "button 1".

Don't click on the space, hover your mouse over the space and press the button on the controller you want bound to the command. Clicking registers the command to the left mouse button (Button 1).

Thanks for the response, but it still doesn't seem to register my button presses.
After doing the compatability fix to default your controller settings in-game you can exit and turn off compatability mode and the controller will then still work so you don't have to have slow menus.

HOW TO FIX THIS ISSUE![

Right click on the shortcut and disable compatibility functions. It's messing with the GOG installed settings or something.
Start the game.

If you're having issues with defining the joysticks buttons (just giving you 1 button) just click on the default button whilst on the joystick option panel, it's on the options on the right hand side. It will define all the controls for you and will work in game.

Now all the menus will work fine, no slow down, and the 360 controller should work fine.

Heh, I'm shocked to say that this worked for me, as well. My wireless 360 controller maps to the Joystick defaults, and there is no menu slowdown. Thanks!

If this helps out a lot of people, you might consider posting this info in a separate thread and asking a "bluetext" to sticky it.
Yep, completely disabling compatibility mode fixed it. Many thanks!
Confirmed, running game with compatibility settings disabled fixed the unable to map, only button 1 issue for me. Clicking default mapped all the keys and was able to play through the first level fine. Awesome.
For me the game didn't have any compatibility mode set anyway. But it is also worth noting that I use my 360 controller as a secondary controller that I map to vJoy as the primary controller via Universal Joystick Remapper when I'm playing old DirectInput games. Better control over sensitivity and the ability to apply a deadzone, and also to switch the incorrect right thumbstick directions so that it works as it should. With this setup, Rogue Squadron picked up the vJoy controller straight away.
