Darucas: Well, I'm just beginning the campaign... and even so, just a few minutes ago the camera bug reappeared, aaand then disappeared when I launched the game again. Whyyy?

Another LucasArts game which seems a bit temperamental! (I'm beginning to think it's one of their trademarks...)

Hopefully, as you say, there are multiple views...
The HOME button view (if you are using the default keyboard settings) never moves from the back of the starfighter so it is good in that respect. It has more of a view than cockpit mode, but a little less than the chase cams. I do wish I'd found that camera mode earlier though, as I only found it after I'd finished the game.
Thanks, indeed this view is the best compromise. This bug is really random on my PC though. Anyway, it's playable! (far more than when I tried to use and tweak the CD version)

It happens to me occasionally. I'm playing on a XBox 360 controller and when the ship zooms away from the camera, I hit the start (default change camera button) and the ship resets itself.
I've just bought this and sure enough the camera is zooming away from me, very annoying. I'm using an Xbox one controller.

Darucas: If you have an nVidia card (or Optimus with the game set to use nVidia), maybe this will help (solution given in comments here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKHn8PLEJBs ):

- open nVidia control panel, and select the game profile for Rogue Squadron
- then change : Max pre-rendered frames = 1 ; Mixed GPU acceleration = Single display performance ; Triple buffering = off

I've found that under windows 8.1 there is no such bug, however if you apply one of the fixes given here http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/post.php?topic=99477&post=1202630 - which are meant to fix performance issues - the camera bug does appear. Using the above tweaks may help in this case too.

Do not play the game with anything open in the background, like Firefox. This seems to undo the nVidia fix.
Just to confirm that the above fix sorted the problem out for me. Happy flying!

AdrenAlineSK: The only thing that worked for me with 100% reliability was using FRAPS like in the video (and I tried everything - nGlide, compatibility, nVidia Control Panel etc.). For info, I use Windows 7 64bit.

Just start recording (F9) during the intro cutscene before each mission. After the cutscene (or when you end it by pressing enter), stop recording in-game.

Doesn't work with the bonus missions since they don't have cutscenes, but you will not be using the hyper-fast A-Wing in those.
To minimize HDD usage configure FRAPS so it records only half-sized videos without sound.

EDIT: Also, on the Xbox360 controller, you can remap X button from throttle to F9, since the right trigger is throttle as well.
Is it possible that FRAPS is limiting your fps and that is fixing the issue for you? You might want to try just fps limiting without recording (if you can figure out what fps FRAPS is imposing and use that as optimal) and save yourself some diskspace/maintenance. ;)

I don't think you can use FRAPS to limit fps outside of recording. I'm currently using RivaTuner Statistics Server to limit my fps (to counter a similar issue I'm encountering in another Star Wars game).

If you decide to try, let us know how it goes.

Cheers.

AdrenAlineSK: I can't seem to get the program working with Rogue Squadron. I tried in Global profile and I also tried adding a ROGUE.exe profile to the program, but not even the fps counter shows up, nevermind limiting the fps. Am I missing something?
Just tried it and RivaTuner Statistics Server is displaying my framerate ok... hmmm. Just to recap:

1 Open the RivaTuner application (mine minimises to the Quick Launch toolbar) and click the Plus (+) icon beneath the browse window
2 Browse to the "Launch Star Wars - Rogue Squadron 3d" shortcut in the root directory or the "Rogue Squadron.EXE" located in the ROGUE dir
3 Ensure in your "Rogue Squadron.EXE" profile in Rivatuner that you set the "Application Detection Level" to "Medium" and that "Show Own Statistics" is set to "On,"

Start your application and see if Rivatuner is reporting your fps. If not, then shout back and I'll scratch my head again.

Once you have RT reporting your FPS then you can use the "Framerate Limit" box to impose an fps to your hearts content. Let us know how you get on.

Cheers,
G.

AdrenAlineSK: Well I'll be a bantha's uncle, it works! (sorry for the delay, I'm having a busy Saturday)

First thing's first: as a new profile in RivaTuner, I had to add Rogue Squadron.exe, from the ROGUE folder. My ROGUE.exe (the GOG shortcut also runs this file) actually runs the game launcher first, so Riva ignores the application no matter what (I tried setting application detection level to High, but it didn't work). Otherwise, I set everything up as you wrote it.

I tried this with two missions - Battle above Taloraan and Beggar's Canyon. Taloraan has a cutscene, Canyon doesn't. Both use fast ships (A-Wing and T16 respectively).

When I set the FPS to 30, the game became somewhat choppy, so I set it to 60. And voila, the 3rd person camera follows the craft! Although, the F3 cam is still shit, the F1 option works wonderfully now. It ain't perfect, it takes its time when you slow down and accelerate rapidly, but it never hangs and always catches up with your ship. It suddenly became very usable. (For info, I only used V-Sync from the in-game options menu, the RivaTuner application and no other external or internal tweaks).

I must say that with FRAPS (at least for me) the F3 cam works better. But F1 cam with RivaTuner is just as good really, maybe even better since it gets really close to your ship when you brake, which helps you avoid obstacles. And you don't have to record during cutscenes, delete useless videos etc.

So yeah, it works! You just have to use the F1 cam. Thanks guartrainer :)
Thanks for reporting back to us about your experiences. Glad it worked (kind of) so you’re not having to delete those FRAP files too, and I guarantee you that someone else will benefit from your experimentation, so you are more than welcome for my small help! Now, GO HUNT THOSE TIES, PILOT! ;)

This, to me, is the #1 most annoying issue about RS3D. My guess is that the only way to permanently fix the camera issue will be for someone to rewrite the code for the portion of the game data files that are responsible. Maybe if someone here has decent coding skills they can maybe write a patch. Someone tried to debug the problem awhile back but never found a dolution (read this on another forum).

I just installed the game again today and am using the Universal Widescreen Patcher I found in this forum. My resolution is set to 1366x768. I know the game doesnt properly support modern aspect ratios. But I nonetheless put it in 16:9, because I like games to fill my entire screen. I font mind a bit of stretching even if it doesnt look quite right. I've always suspected that chosen res has something to do with the bug. I havent had much luck with NGlide, it works but the bug occurs every time I use it. D3DWindower works fine and helps mitigate the bug, but I like my games in fullscreen. So far the bug hasnt occured on my current install. I've also noticed that it seems to gappen alot on retail versions but not so much on the GOG version. Perhaps there is something different about the game's EXE files.
My problem is when I get done recording, I get a black screen with audio. I've tried bot Frapps and Dxtory with the same result. any ideas how to fix this? I'm running Windows 10

Hello, just tap F1 on your keyboard once and bam nailed it!!! No more zooming, just do this at the begining of every level.
