Is there a way to change the resolution? I use a widescreen with a 1680x1050 resolution and the left boarder is cut off. Or is there a way to center the game on the screen and play it with black borders?
This question / problem has been solved by H2IWclassicimage
It should default to 640x480 full screen (the resolution was never adjustable to my knowledge).
you can run the game in a window by adding a -w to the shortcut, but you cannot change the resolution other than that.

Thanks for the tip. It works but the window is very small. Now I don't know what it is better. Run it in fullscreen with hidden icons on the left side or in a very small window. :(
May I say that for me thats very disappointing? I still have the original CD here.
Its not even stated in the game description.... I seriously consider getting a refund.

It's an old game and widescreens didn't exist back in the days. So you can't really blame them that there is no widescreen support.
But you can get a refund if you like. Contact the support.

I found out that playing the Empire is better. Because of the different interface layout all buttons are in sight.

The buttons which are hidden when I play the Rebellion are the message buttons and the menu button on the left side.

I'd go looking to your graphics card software settings and check the scaling options.
For instance, in the NVIDIA Control Panel under the Display options there is one titled Adjust desktop size and position. Within that option is a Scaling setting. Using the Aspect Ratio option keeps the original image aspect (i.e. 4:3) so that it appears pillarboxed on widescreen monitors. But make sure that you are using the GPU for scaling and not the monitor.

Wow! It worked. Thanks.

Great news. :)
I always leave the Aspect Ratio option set as standard so that games play in the correct aspect for the screen resolution they use, whilst being as large as they can be on the monitor screen.

Yeah I know, but I hoped for some improvement on this paticular issue, after all I managed to get the game work even without GOG.
Is anyone else having display issues. The icons for the various items are all upside down. For instance when you go to a planet and look at the characters there, the names appear up in the window rather than below the icon and the icon is upside down.

Any hints?

Right-click on desktop shortcut->Properties.

In the target, the .exe with full path should be within double quotes. After that, add a space and -w.

I have a problem with this solution. While the game does run in windowed mode, I lose my ability to use drop-down menus in the game. For instance, at a shipyard, if I want to select which ship to build I need to click the drop-down icon. This works fine normally, but doesn't work in windowed mode.
