Mine also crashes right after the intro video or if I try to skip the intro video. Its acting just like the cd version that I have so I dont know what is causing it but I am going to send support a message about it.
Works great at work on my windows 7 (and i LOVE the game) . on windows 8.1 64 bit crashes after a few minutes... anyone get it to work and if so what comapability settings.
Same here. Running 8.1, I can get it into the main menu, but if I try to start a campaign or a skirmish game it crashes back to desktop. Even on software mode. :/
I got it running on my Windows 8.1 without software mode.

1)Install in C:\Program files(x86)
2)open config.exe in Gamefolder select your Graphic Card and resolution
3)open sfc.ini and edit the line windowed=0 to windowed=1
4)right click on Starfleet.exe select Properties -> go to compatibility tab:
Activate the following options(If they are grayed out click on "change for all users"):

Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)

check(Very Important):
reduced colors
choose:
16-Bit-Colors (65536)

and check the two options:
disable display scaling on high dpi settings
run as Administrator

Edit:
If you want to play in Fullscreen you have still to set it to windowed=1 in sfc.ini
Just change your desktop resolution to the one you selected in the config.exe

And it gets even better. Do as he said, then download the little programm Qres, put it in your game directory and create a bat file, for example start.bat, with the following content:

qres.exe /x 1280 /y 1024
starfleet.exe
qres.exe /x 2560 /y 1440

This way windows automatically switches to 1280x1024 and returns to your default resolution after you have quit the game (in my case 2560x1440).

Now add 32x AA and 16x AF and the game starts to look quite nice.

there is a simpler way to get this game working and that is to enable the legacy components as win 7/8/8.1/10 all have them turned off by default

1. go to components and features
2. turn windows features on or off
3. when list pops up scroll down for legacy components and make sure it has a tick in it and also has direct play inside the folder again this is off by default thanks to Microsoft thinking we don't play old games

this should fix about 95% of gog proplems with old school games ... some times sounds files will be needed but this should do for the most part
