I start the game and there is only sound but no picture untill the first movie, then the movie plays fine but then it goes to what I think is the main menu but its just a black screen but I can see my curser and can hear the sound like I am moving over tabs. I tried running in as administrator and in windows xp compatibility mode but it still does the same thing. Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this.

What Windows version are you running, Bladeregret? I'm assuming you have drivers and DirectX all up to date.
Yeah, video drivers and DirectX are the first thing to check. One thing you might want to do is make sure you have DirectX 9 installed... DX9 is a separate thing from DX10 and DX11 and you can have both DX9 and DX10 or 11 installed at the same time. Many older games require DX9 to work, even if you already have 10 or 11 installed.
I am running windows 7, I have directx 11 but I don't think I have 9 where would you recommend downloading that? I have a nivida gforce graphics card with up to date drivers. I have found if I tab out and then go back the main menu is there but I can't click on anything even though I have full contol of the curser.
You can probably just grab DX9 here:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/directx.html

It's probably also somewhere on Microsoft's download center, if you don't trust third-party sites, but Microsoft's site is confusing and has about 250 different downloads related to DirectX.

Also I double-checked the system requirements and Space Rangers 2 does need DX9 (or at least, a DX9-compatible graphics card, which suggests it uses DX9). So hopefully that will fix your problem!
I got directx 9 but it din't change anything. It acts like I am clicking on things and but its not changing the screen.
Hmm...

I did some googling and found the following advice, which appears to be about running the game through Wine:

"When starting Space Rangers 2 (and the original Space Ranger), I'm greeted with a black screen. The sound plays in the background, and it is even possible to click on menu items, thought nothing is visible.

To resolve this problem, edit/add the following key in the registry for the bottle:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\
DirectDrawRenderer = opengl

Works perfectly for me after this change."

Something like this could help, but you probably don't need the registry to do it... is there an .ini file somewhere in the game install directory? Open it and see if there's an option for OpenGL somewhere. You could also try different screen resolutions to see if that helps.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I can't find any file that ends in .ini or a OpenGL finle at all. I don't know how to get to the registy to change anything. I have tried all of the compatibility modes I have tried runnning it as an administrator. I don't know what else to try.
In Windows 7 the ini files sometimes go to weird locations. Check under "My Documents" and then possibly in the subfolder "My Games" to see if there are any .ini files for Space Rangers 2 there.

You can also try installing the game to a directory OTHER than Program Files because that can cause problems sometimes. But if you've tried running as administrator already, then that's probably not it.

Anyone else have some ideas?

Nope but I'm having the same issue.
Have you tried pressing the ESC button?
I have the same issue, and most videos don't play on my system, but apart from that the game is fine.

from that post it looks like it is system registry adjustment not an ini or other config file adjustment. Its generally a bad idea to poke around in there if you don't know what you are doing though. Basic rule of thumb is to back up the registry before making changes, but I would also recommend reading up on the habit first.

out of curiosity what are your system specs? Video card mainly.
Same problem here... at this point... i just want my money back
Running windows 7 x64

Yeah, but this was for running under Wine, and it seems to just be telling the system to use OpenGL instead of DirectX. I thought there might be a way to switch to OpenGL without using the registry in Windows... seems like the kind of thing that could be included in an .ini file.

Then again, DirectX might work fine when actually running Windows... OpenGL may have been needed because the user was running the game under Wine rather than natively in Windows.

This problem definitely seems to be video-related though. I would also like to know what cards people are using when they encounter this problem.
Open the cfg.txt file from wherever you installed it and change the video mode from R2 to R1. I was having the same problem and this fixed it for me. I have Windows 7 64 bit
