And WOW was it bad, but I certainly enjoyed it.

I mean, when you have to use noclip to get through open doorways, and have enemies 1-hit-killing you before you get around the corner, you know something is amiss. Still, there was a certain magic to the game, and I have to admit that I really enjoyed myself despite all its flaws. It was wacky, and had a lot of obvious effort and love put into it. Plus, rampaging through the streets in a giant mech was FUN, especially considering how ridiculous the weapons were.
I can't disagree on any part of this.
Noclip wasn't strictly necessary for surviving doors, but the collision detection could be quite lethal on them, no doubt... Usually an unhealthy level of caution around them did the trick for me, though.

I honestly couldn't find any other way around them :(

Ahh well.... the sad part is that I'll probably be playing this game again in the future :)
I actually found refreshing this "enemies die from a few shots but so do you" method. It made the game like a western movie - the man with the fastest draw (and aim) wins. :)
The one part what I DIDN'T enjoy was the final fight on the starship. Fighting against a boss who can absorb 200 shots - while he can kill you with one - is no fun at all.
Shogo is a fun game. It was contemporary with Unreal and Half-Life, neither of which I bothered to finish even though I got far in both of them, but I've played through Shogo twice. The story in Shogo might not be better than those two games (hard to compare them really), but it is certainly more engaging. In Shogo, there is always something happening while you are really rather lonley and asocial most of the time in Half-Life and Unreal.

I also like those western-style gunfights, sure you can die easily, but if you have a machinegun you can cut through a whole corridor full of enemies in seconds. That really brings you "shooting joy"!

Haha, you can be killed by doors? Has never happened to me...
I love this game. It was my first FPS I believe. Yeah, its got some issues like having too many trial-and-error moments and the level design could be better. But the script and overall feel of the game more than makes up for it. Have played through it maybe 5 times in total.
It should really get a remake.

I'd settle for a fanmod sequel.
Well even though its been over a decade, they did say in the credits to watch out for more games in the Shogo series....could really use a new game in the franchise from Monolith.
Maybe they're still looking for anything that can match Negai (Wish), the opening song. That was pretty hard to top for its aggressive anime-mecha-ness.
I remember playing Shogo in the 1999/2000 timeframe and I really enjoyed the game back then.
I'm almost at the end of the game myself, i admit it was a lot fun but GEEZ it was as much frustrating too sometimes, and i got stuck on doorways and ladders many times too.
I never had any problems of "dieing easy" when on the mech, maybe because i picked a tough one but when on foot... GOD, Sanjuro is an army man but he's a pussy compared to Gordon Freeman that is "phisyc" (or dunno how do you write it in english, i'm not a motherlanguage), he can't take one or two hits without dieing even with full armor and health.

Another problem i found it's that there are certain parts in which you can't avoid to take damage, like when you have to jump out of the window and take hits from the soldiers below, or when you get inside the airpipe that even if heals you completly doesen't replenish the armor you loose from the hit >.<.
Well I haven't finished yet, but unless I'm mistaken I'm pretty close. The two things that popped into mind continuously as I played this game was how much it reminded me of Max Payne, and how simple it was.

I know Max Payne is an odd comparison, but the story-driven nature of this game and the rhythm of cutscenes followed by shooting set pieces mixed with the odd pathfinding level brought back the same feeling as that game. As far as the simplicity, it made me think this game was truly meant to be played by preteens and young adults. Granted, some of the shooting levels were tough, with those round-the-corner one-shot artists, but once you figure out how to use the sniper scope, all you needed was the tiniest glimpse of the enemy. Health, armor and ammo were all generous, especially where you needed them, and the pathfinding levels never come close to the pull-your-hair-out Tomb Raider variety.

So you never at any point feel like the game's too tough or unfair, and with the simplest precautions you can play this game for the story it showcases.

Confession: I haven't faced the final boss yet, but if it's as hard as Bolch 76 reports, I may have to give it a miss.

I died several times, but I don't think its too hard as far as final bosses go.
After beating much harder games like Blood 2 and Kingpin, I hadn´t problem with shogo at all...

also, unlike most of the community, I found the outside mechs sequences funnier
Man I haven't played this game in a long time. I can remember it having 2 endings, one drastically shortens the game though.
