Wailwulf: I don't think it actually is the sound file itself.

For me, when using PL1 Terrain graphics, I crash when the game is looking for bookcls2.wav I have taken a sound file that I know works in RB3D (scream from jumping from the plane), copied and renamed it and placed it in all the folders. Still a crash, so it might not be the sound file itself.

Just did three tests again, and for two, the last line said looking for bookcls2.wav, and one test, bookcls2.wav was second to last line. The last line, which I had never seen before, said "Error 126".

According to a Google search, Error 126 is usually a missing or corrupted dll file.

wili_rovfar: I don't think its a sound file either. Sometimes a bit of the music plays before crash, other times not. Any ideas why the error message says "Red Baron II single player has stopped"? I downloaded RB3D from GOG and the icon says 3d . I thought this download was up to date on patches, no? Thanks for all the help Wili
It says Red baron II because RB3D is a modified/fixed/patched Red Baron II. The biggest difference between RBII and RB3D is the multi-player and the the Glide graphics. There are some flight model changes and they got rid of the armies charging across NML in SP. They even put out a Superpatch so those with RBII could upgrade to RB3D

Wulfc: I'd suggest you find that last sound file & try and play it - it's just a wav file, so double clicking on it should open it up in Media Player. If that fails, try another wav in there - looks like your problem is sound anyway.

The problem with any Promised Land terrains that have the modified palettes, which include Full Canvas Jacket terrains, is solely a conflict with the palettes

As Kessler's representative and original member of The Promised Land Graphics Group,
I recommend using one of the "PL2 terrain and PL objects" sets on Swordfish's site:
http://www.rb3d.net/Swordfish/links.htm .. these should not crash your game
just tried these patches, the pl2 terrain and object bundle and the big bundle, tried with and without compatibily mode and admin rights, but it still crashes after the flight video-intro, after a few tunes came out.

thats sad, just bought it today for my netbook with win7 32 bit starter, and it does not run now.. but i learned to pay more attention to the system info before buying, and to look into the forum..

an, well, red baron 1, von 1990, well, that one is not really playable anymore, and i grow up with vic20 and c64.

Are you starting the game in windowed mode? (See my first and second post in this thread)

The newer systems seem to have trouble with full screened Direct Draw mode, which is RB3D's default mode. But in windowed mode or Glide mode, it works fine, problem is getting to the preferences to get to those modes.

Goto the shortcut for RB3D and Right click and select Properties. Under the Shortcut Tab, goto the window that says Target, you should see something like this: "E:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Red Baron Pack\Red Baron 3D\Baron.exe" Add a space -w at the end so it looks like this: "E:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Red Baron Pack\Red Baron 3D\Baron.exe" -w This will make the game open up in windowed mode. This should get you through the intro movie and into the menu screen.

Now, if you wish to play in full screen, you will need a Glide Wrapper (a little files that emulates a 3DFX VooDoo video card in your computer). I have four Glide Wrappers hosted here:
http://cid-e196374a237958b4.office.live.com/browse.aspx/Public/GlideWrappers
I would start with the CJWrapper first as it is the easiest one to use. just put the glide2x.dll file in your game directory. Then start RB3D, goto Preferences in the menu, select Graphic Settings, then select Graphic Options. Click on Glide and select your screen resolution.

hello,

i tried now as you said. sadly it didnt help. but thank you very much for your help!! :)

it was a brand new instalation, after that i added -w, then i started it a first time. It seemed to change to window-mode, the window rested black then it crashed.

i tried to change the resolution to 1024x768px, in the hope it may help. i updated directx, put your glide-wrapper in the folder, and updated terrain and objects, also tried different compatibility mods, and off course i run it as admin. nothing worked so far.

this is a pitty, i would really like to play it. seems to be really a great game! i will check back here, maybe someone finds a solution for the pcs with problems running red baron *hopes*

:)
now i tried also the batch-file mentioned in the second post - thanks again Wailwulf for your effort! :

i had noproblems to make such a file and copy it to the folder. then i noticed, that the word Barron may is written wrong, as title and inside the notecard, changing it to Baron helped. but still it chrashes on the same point. starting the batchfile directly does not help either.

I assume you have a 64 bit machine? What is your graphics card? Nvidia? ATI? or inboard? Not sure I can actually help, but am trying to figure out why some on Win7 have no problems, some have fixable/avoidable problems (me) and some are in your boat.
im trying it on a single core atom netbook with win7 starter, 32 bit, and an intel 3150 onboard.
I was able tofix this by using -window not -w.

Should point out I'm using Windows 7 64 bit Home Premum.

Thanks for letting us know. I'll try to remember to add that next time as an option.

Almost a year later and I just wanna add that this method also worked for me. Happily, I did not waste 10 dollars and 2 hours (first browser download interrupted at the end) for nothing. Thanks.
Thanks for the helpful bit of info about the -window addition to the shortcut, worked fine for me afterwards, never thought i'd ever play this game again after so many years!. Also in case this may also be helpful to others, after some experimentation afterwards to see if I could get the glide mode working, I can report that on my laptop (AMD Phenom II X4, ATI 6470M, Win 7 64bit), I was able to get RB3D working in full screen without any menu or ingame glitches using the psVoodoo glide wrapper. Tried it several times without any crashes back to desktop or other errors.
