It's the long-awaited Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness Enhanced!

Features tons of bugfixes and improvements, including but not limited to:

- Over an hour of lost audio by the narrator, John Rhys-Davies can now be heard as intended. Death and inventory screens are now narrated (as much as possible!) and many, many unique descriptions now play in almost every single room.
- Removing all dead ends in the game.
- Fixing several annoying bugs: bone cage, paladin honor shield, climbing book, thunder and necrotaurs roaring, etc.
- Fixing missing icons.
- Improving animations and consistency in some areas, such as with climbing and the Levitate spell.
- Improving the sound during the cave endgame and during the final battle in the essence chamber.
- Restoring cut encounters.
- Restoring deaths.
- Restoring lost dialogue such as the final dream sequence.

This patch is fully compatible with DosBox and ScummVM, since it just uses Sierra's own patch file system to override existing game resources. All scripts are based on resource files that were installed from my 1997 Collection CD using the SHP installer. NRS's speed fixes are already included and the wraith barrow script (53.scr) is superseded by my own version, so there is no more lockup.

I started this project in 2019 and due to various unforeseen disasters (fires, crime, virus, inflation, etc.), it was pushed back until Halloween 2021. Many apologies, but we finally made it!!

I'm making this thread for people to easily find and download the patch, and for those of you who have questions, want to show support or criticism, or just need help.

It may be time for me to replay my favorite Quest for Glory shortly. Always loved the atmosphere and setting in Shadows of Darkness
Yes thanks so does this fix punny bones and Katrinas missing audio. Also does it fix the glitch where Ivan audio says igors death must be avenged even though Franz is suppose to talk.
Katrina should be fixed.

Punny Bones unfortnately, his lines were voiced by the narrator so there's not much we can do. If he has any lines that aren't voiced, I can search for the audio in the resource files.

Franz. Man. It's very sad, but they duplicated Ivan's line over his in the resource file. I can't find the proper audio anywhere. It's probably on a tape somewhere in Sierra's vaults.

Also guys, it's come to my attention that the Heart Altar room may be crashing the game on the return to the cave. If this is happening to you, save outside of that room. Delete 720.scr and 720.hep from the PATCHES folder. Then load the game and try to enter again. Really sorry about that! I'll take a look tomorrow.

OCT 31 UPDATE:

Hi all, I've re uploaded the zip to the gitHub repository. It should not crash when you enter the Heart Altar room anymore.

I also fixed a decompiler bug in the Thieves' Guild. You should be able to disarm the traps on the two safes again!

Github has very, very bad page design, it took me ages to figure out where I could download it myself (and then I proceeded to download the wrong file)

Thanks so much for working on this! The patch sounds great and I can't wait to try it. I'm especially glad you fixed the dead-end bugs (I ran into the Domovoi one myself, years ago) and the ending. Nothing kills your gaming buzz like glitches during the final battle with Ad Avis.

I have a couple of questions about issues that I don't think were in the readme (sorry if I missed them):

- Outside Baba Yaga's hut: I recall Bonehead skipping some of his dialogue, I believe when he asks you to bring him a present (the hat). His lines abruptly cycle past too fast to read, and with no voice acting. Can this be fixed as well? If you need new line readings, I have a Brooklyn accent, ha. :-)

- Erana's garden / dream sequence: When I've played the game in recent years, it tends to freeze during the dream where you kiss Erana (right after her face appears). As I recall it's a "new" bug, maybe something to do with playing on modern computers. Is that fixable?

- Too bad about Ivan and Franz's dialogue about Igor not being fixable. Can the wrong line just be taken out?

Again, thanks for all the good work on this. It's my favorite game in the series, but the glitches have always annoyed me and I figured they were too numerous and daunting to be permanently fixed. It's great to see folks are still invested in these games!

Hi Duke,

Bonehead has exactly 8 dialogue lines with missing audio. I've searched the RESOURCE.AUD file with GameAudioPlayer and I've asked other people about the issue, but the missing audio doesn't seem to exist anywhere! One workaround to the problem is to open the options menu and turn off the digital Audio. You should be able to read what he's saying without the game skipping through boxes. There's probably a way to modify the QFGMessenger class to display text bosses with missing audio instead of timing out. I'll keep doing research and investigate a better solution to this problem.

We could definitely mute dialogue lines that have the wrong audio attached to them. I just didn't have the heart to mute Franz. He's become an iconic meme at this point!

One of the Erana's Garden dreams freezes the game? That's definitely new to me. Will investigate this issue for sure!

So glad that you guys are enjoying the game again, it's my favorite in the series! I apologize for Github's design. Tried to make it obvious where to download the zip file under the Releases section.
