Hicks233: This [honey] is superb! Thank you for mentioning this!
I am the only one that disliked it? I felt the map huge and empty, while the visuals are incredible the pacing and the gameplay are boring... I have also similar feeling for the acclaimed Warpspasm, when a single level has 500 monsters but no hordes I feel something is wrong.

Try The Masque of the Red Death or Dry sorrow.

tu32: Hi,

I just wanted to share my favorite mods and would also like to know which ones you recommend.

1. Abyss of Pandemonium (Single Player)
It adds not only a campaign but also new enemies and weapons. I especially like the end boss. Was once a retail expansion, but seems to be free now. Also works well with quake epsilon it you want better graphics.
Download: https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/aopfm_v2.html

2. Zerstörer (Single Player)
Extremely well made fan mod. Also adds a new campaign. Hey, you get a chainsaw as a weapon in the first level! The atmosphere is one of the best.

So, what mods can you recommend?
I was just about to shill Epsilon (http://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-epsilon-build) :P. guess I don't need to that now.

Seriously, I didn't think Ol' Quake could look this good.
Digs01
Don't get fooled by the boring name, this is essentially another episode for Quake!
Similar to the original levels in quality and style it includes 8 levels (one secret) and a starting map.

Looks interesting, I'm trying it out now :)
Egyptian Myth
I cannot believe I missed this pearl for all this years. It is a perfect action oriented map! The architecture is also superb, but you won't have time to watch it! Greatly advised.

Deathmatch Classics Vol. 3
Another whole new episode with 8 maps (one secret) and one start map. Tight and brutal maps, really nice in my opinion.

Terra (it was already mentioned). For some reason the author hates this pack and abandoned it. So there is no real ending, the journey just stops. However, I will be a very exciting journey, strongly recommended if you like action and fast maps.

Quake condensed Quake in five maps! Works unexpectedly well.

Func Map Jam 3 - Zerstörer theme. Great and fresh maps with an uncommon theme.
Glad you keep adding stuff here. :-) You remind me of stuff I really should go back and play again (or even missed the first time).
Well, since you said so... A recent comment reminded me of this map.
Neighboring Alcaza A fairly open map with horde combat and not oversized. The pack also includes Laboratory X, but it is not as good in my opinion.

And a large map from the same author: Conflagrant Rodent. I think is an absolute masterpiece and puts all other large maps I played in shame.

Arcane Dimensions, a totally new Quake. 8 (yes, it is a Eight) new episodes with few maps each. Lots of new monsters and medium to large maps.

In other works, go for it!

Edit: I played it a bit more and I have to add. If in the 1997 instead of that strange sci-fi thingy id would have give THIS to us as Quake2 everybody would be happier.

enigmatic hint... You must be hot-headed to follow your nightmares...

A few more things about the Arcane Dimensions mod:

You should get both the base Arcane Dimensions mod and also its "patch 2". (There was a "patch 1" before this, but you can ignore that; patch 2 completely supersedes/replaces patch 1.) The recommended way to install is to first install the Arcane Dimensions mod in some mod folder, then copy the files/directories from patch 2 into that mod folder. The patch will add some new files and also replace some files.

The recommended Quake engine is version 0.91.0 (or better). That's the Jan 18 release of Quakespasm, so if you downloaded Quakespasm before then, you'll need to grab the latest version. I think it's also been said that [url=http://quakeone.com/proquake/interims/mark_v_20150508_windows.zip]Fitzquake Mark V can run the mod. Once you have applied "patch 2", you can also choose to use . Or, if you really like the palettized-color look of a software renderer, you can use [url=http://super8.qbism.com/]qbism Super8 or the "winquake" variant of Fitzquake Mark V.

The mod is pretty memory-hungry, so broadly it's a good idea to use command-line arguments like "-heapsize 256000 -zone 4096" when launching it. (That's not necessary though if you're using a new enough version of Quakespasm, since QS uses large heapsize and zone values by default.)

The Horde of Zendar, large beautiful map with nonlinear gameplay. Feels strangely "realistic" for a Quake map, in the sense that in reality you have many ways to move in a building while in Quake usually much less so. Here it is not the case.
Often cited as one of the best map ever.

Johnny_Law: Can't play Arcane Dimensions right now because of Xmas-things, but looking forward to it!

A couple of notes that aren't obvious:

- Right now it is recommended to use the developer-latest build of Quakespasm for playing it: http://quakespasm.ericwa.com/job/quakespasm-sdl2/lastStableBuild/artifact/quakespasm-r1268.zip

- The mod is pretty memory-hungry, so it's a good idea to use command-line arguments like "-heapsize 256000 -zone 4096" when launching it.

Just a question: Where is the program you link to? When I click the link it opens up a HTTP404 Not Found Error page, just for your info.
Ah thanks for the heads-up. Looks like the "latest build" there will age out eventually.

Hopefully the Quakespasm official build will get updated to include these changes soon-ish. :-)

Edit: and now it has! http://quakespasm.sourceforge.net/download.htm

The Hell That's Coming, beautiful uncomplicated fun. A simple to play, but magnificent looking map with some nice ideas.
New patch for Arcane Dimensions (still requires the base mod files, then apply patch on top):

https://www.quaddicted.com/filebase/ad_v1_42patch2.zip

Couple of new maps in this patch: ad_e1m1 and ad_e2m2 (screenshot attached). Lots of other fixes and gameplay tuning too, as well as added support for software-renderer engines. Unlike "patch 1", this patch works for all supported Quake engines. I'll edit my post above to keep it up-to-date.
