Oh boy, I applied the widescreen patch and the UI fix to my game, set the .ini framerate to 60fps and am playing it fullscreen.

The framerate runs at 60 when nothing is happening, but as soon as a text dialog pops up, the screen moves or I move around in menues, the framerate drops to 10-25fps and the mouse/other controls become ridiculously unresponsive.

What gives?

Don't change the .ini at all.

I set the .ini to defaults. Didn't help at all. In fact, it's even worse now and never goes above 25 fps.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe something via these links could help you:

I just set the ini to 60 fps out of curiosity because of this thread. It actually increases the game speed. It's pretty awesome! I wouldn't recommend unless you've played the game before - it probably makes the later combat pretty dangerous.
For the record, I'm running Windows XP SP3 and I have an ATI card.

The game has horrible framerates when I'm running it without the patches as well.

I was having similar trouble, but I seem to have found a way to fix it. Right click on your desktop and select Properties to get to the display properties. Switch to the "Settings" tab and click on "Advanced". From there switch to the "Troubleshoot" tab and lower the Hardware acceleration bar to "None". Click apply and play. You'll want to turn hardware acceleration back on when you are done, so this will need to be done every time you play.

NOTE: I've barely tested this, but it seems to help.
ln Win XP try this:

Desktop > Display Properties > Trobleshoot > Hardware Acceleration to 3rd level
Thanks, I think that ought to have done it! Any idea on how to get rid of the mouse pointer trails that appear due to this?

I'm still having trouble with that myself. Sorry. Glad I could help otherwise.

I have the same problem (I have an ATi 4870). I haven't been able to fix the pointer trails, but every other part of the game runs perfect so far using the hardware acceleration method.

Apparently the framerate-to-pointer-trails problem is just an issue with ATi cards (nVidia had/has other issues). Back in the day it was completely fixable by reverting to older drivers (now completely obsolete).

Is there any way to fix this in Windows 7? I have a Radeon HD5870 and the jumpy frame rate makes the game very unpleasant to play. Characters appear to teleport across the room with the frame rate I'm getting. I have also installed the widescreen patch, but that was only to see if it fixed the problem; unfortunately it made it slightly worse.

I have not noted any graphical glitches though, just exceedingly poor performance.
I downloaded the Direct X SDK, went into Direct X Control Panel(non x86 version), selected DirectDraw and unchecked "Use Hardware Acceleration."

This did the same thing as above but it shouldnt affect your newer games(so no switching back and forth for me, so far).

Edit- I'm on Win 7 Pro 64-bit with an Nvidia 400 series card.

Thanks man, I had some performance issues also, but this solves it :)

I om on Vista, and like voivod I couldn't use the other method because my driver "wouldn't allow it".

So again, thanks! Shame I get mouse cursor trail instead (anyone to fix it?), but smooth performance makes it more than worth it:):):)
