Vagabond: Do 1280x720 or 1280x800. It's perfect.
I was about to post exactly this. Far better than 640x480 yet everything is still perfectly readable.

Gromuhl: I run it @1024x640 (16:10), which is a pretty good resolution for this game. The native 1280x800 was a bit too small for my tablet screen :)
For 16:9 monitors, try 1024x576 (if your monitor can support it, mine doesn't). This resolution is perfect and does not reveal too much of the map at once. im using 1024x600 and have slight borders at the left and right sides.
