I bought the game today but I have other games I want to play so I was wondering it takes most to finish so I can figure when to fit into my backlog(better sooner than later). Also is it linear or there a lot of side quests?
There are a lot of side quests, and it is very, very long.
Okay so probably not something I want to play along side other games then. I think I'll wait to play after Castlevania.

Its roughly 40 hours long for (almost) total completion on first go.

Oh, so it's not THAT long. I mean, not BG2-long :-)
If so, I might find some time to play it soon, as I also have a huge backlog of games and so little time...

It takes me three to four days of serious playing to get through it, so no, its not long. In fact its quite tiny compared to BGII. BGII takes 40-50 hours just for the main plot.
Also Torment has very few random scripted events which means a thorough playthrough will ensure that you see more or less everything.
It took me about 40 hours as well, and I think as much as a fourth of that would have been cut if I didn't bother with a sidequest where you can recruit a certain secret, and awesome, party member. That bit's basically a mini dungeon crawler, and a slog to complete-the aforementioned party member is worth it, though.

I did pretty much every sidequest I could find, as well, and there's a bunch of them, you'll definitely want the experience, and most of them provide pretty interesting little stories in themselves.

I can't believe they got such an awesome voice actor for that character and then barely gave him any lines... He's very easy to miss, too.
This game has quite a few dialogues that may take more than half-an-hour. It is a very, very long game.
The game took me 3-4 weeks to complete. I thought it was short lol. Then again, maybe because I was just so into it... This game is effing GREAT.

Yes and no. Given that what your character is able - or not able - to do depends so much on your starting stats - there is more and different things to discover on a 2nd play-through with a radically different character. If you stats are too low to even try something corresponding options are never revealed to you.

Almost every alternate dialog option is opened with having a sufficiently high wisdom which is imperative due to the xp bonus.... I dump most of my points into it every time....
Since this game is very dialog heavy I recommend that should no let too much time pass between play sessions. Unfortunately due to lack of time I couldn't do this when I completed the game a couple of years back. It was still a great experience but you do tend to get a more fragmented picture of the whole story in the end.
I did about every quest but I don't actually recall how long it took but it must have taken weeks/months at my pace. (6-8 hours a week)

Sure. Wisdom is the stat to max for the most complete experience. But high strength / high agility give you additional options too - particularly noticeable right in the mortuary.

You can still get the best ending even if you don't have max Wisdom............
