Roahin: Leveling Stats
Level 2 - Knife Master 1
Skills: Mobility +2, Trickery +1, Knowledge (Arcana) +1, Perception +1, Persuasion +1
Feats: Weapon Finesse [Rogue Ability]

Level 3 - Knife Master 2
Skills: Mobility +1, Trickery +1, Knowledge (Arcana) +1, Perception +2, Persuasion +1
Feats: Improved Unarmed Strike, Dodge[RT]
Hi friends!

Any help here would be massively appreciated! Is it just me,or is this build impossible? This is Roahin's Linzi - Iron Halfling. At level 3, it asks you get to get Dodge as a rogue talent, but Dodge is a feat, and therefore not gainable, making crane style in the next level impossible?

EDIT:

In case it helps anyone else: I figured it out. You need to take a Rogue Talent called 'Combat Trick' which gives you another combat feat. You can select Dodge there :)

If you were to simplify the Beastmaster Amiri build to 3 classes, what would the best balance be? I'm pretty sold on taking that 6th level of ranger to get a combat feat, but lukewarm after that.

Roahin: Sharing some of the insights I've found for the companions in the game. I'm not planning on posting any Mercenary or MC builds here, just suggestions on different ways to build or use your Companions. As both a roleplayer and rollplayer, I strive for two standards in each build.

1. It has to be conceptually appropriate. Sure, you could technically make Amiri a Cleric of Erastil for the OP Animal Domain, but canonically she's a follower of Gorum. My builds need to suit the character's concept most of all.

2. They have to be effective. I only post builds that I've personally used on Challenging or harder difficulties and can verify that they pull their weight. I've noticed a LOT of builds get posted out there where the character is a walking liability that contributes nothing until level 15+ when the uber-awesome combo it was building toward takes affect. My builds aim for showing meaningful gain and ability throughout every level.
I just wanted to stop in and add my thanks to the pile. These were exactly the kinds of builds I was hoping to find for my play through, as it seemed way more fun to try and stick with the core of the character's concept versus a more generic min-max.

I also greatly appreciate the level-by-level breakdowns on what to take and why.

Roahin,

Although I know it may not be optimal, I’ve wanted to play Mystic Theurge for my MC. Would you recommend using the build you designed for Tristian? Would you do anything different if you had full control? For stats I was thinking Str: 8 Dex: 14 Con: 10 Int: 10 Wis: 20 Cha: 16 using the generic Aasimar. Would this still be a waste of the MC slot? Hard difficulty by the way.

Thanks!

Roahin,

Thanks for the wonderful builds. Most of these builds are very intuitive and how I typically build the companions anyway. But I was thinking if you have any builds for Kalikke/Kanerah?

They are the ones that I almost always struggle with. Dark Elementalist seems pretty bad, but Kanerah seems to be the damage dealer out of the two sisters. I like to have them around, they seem to one of the more interesting companions. And they are also the only companions that I always end up thinking they can do much better that what I am getting out of them.

Thanks,

Hi Roahin. Joining my voice to those above. I want to thank you for those builds, it's nice seeing some strong builds that don't all have one monk level because monk and that try to respect the spirit of the companions.

Not sure if you're still around or playing this game but I would also definitely be interested to see your take on the sisters.

Just coming by to say I found these yesterday and adore them! I've just started a new playthrough and hoped I'd find some way to make use of the companions I tend to sideline bc I don't really know what to do with them.

Hope there's more - I'd love to see another Tristan option, or anything at all for Jubilost :)

Using the Linzi tank build, I can't get her load on light because of her strength. I currently have both strength and dex betls and I'm not sure which one to use. How bad is the medium penalty?

A quick note to people who have been asking for new builds or had questions about existing ones...

A couple of months ago I'd been doing a write up for Kanerah / Kalikke and kept running into a problem. The best part of the Tiefling is that they're two in one. One of them can be used purely as a hole-filler for your party while the other is mained for ability. But the issue is that making a build that way presupposes holes in your party and I'd really only been offering single builds for companions. This has actually been an ongoing issue. Some of the best feats in the game are Teamwork feats - something that's been painfully lacking in my builds because I hate gimping a character by presupposing that the rest of your party will have compatible Teamwork feats / builds.

So I decided the natural evolution is to start making adventuring party builds. A party of 5 NPCs built around theme, concept and filling all the important and necessary roles for the party. All the skill checks would be met, all the camping options handled, and no weaknesses in combat for any situation. This would allow the player to make any kind of character and know that he's got support and doesn't have to build toward any niche.

I'd written up four parties, a Lawful Evil, Chaotic Good, Lawful Good and True Neutral and was a good chunk of the way through a Neutral Good party when my Hard Drive died. I thought my builds were backed up on Cloud storage, but they weren't. (As a side note, GOG Galaxy quit syncing saves with Pathfinder because of how much memory all the saves took, so those guys were gone too.)

Faced with the exhausting idea of starting from scratch, I'd just about quit posting. Eventually, I'm sure I'll find the motivation and start a new thread with full companion parties, but for now, that's where I'm at.

Thanks for all the kind words from people that enjoyed the builds.

Did it die for good as in it literally doesn't spin?

Yeah, dead-dead. I knew it was struggling already, but I'd really hoped I could squeeze a little more life out of it. Even after it died, I spent half a day in denial, seating and reseating, trying new SATA cables, etc.

Give Tristian 1 level of Thug, weapon focus Light Crossbow and Dazzling Display. Skill focus Persuasion. He's definitely not a Thug type of character, but other than buffing and healing, he's pretty useless. With a single level of Thug he becomes a valued addition to my party. Just put Demoralize on autocast and that's it... use Dazzling Display for when you really get swarmed and you'll be fine.

Oof, that's tough and very demoralizing for you I'm sure.

Thanks for these builds you've already posted, they're very useful. Your approach is refreshing and a large part of the appeal.

I just want to say thank you for all the work you have done, both for the builds we have, and all the ones that we may never see.

Mikkiness (a commenter above and my partner) pointed me in the direction of these and we have both found them to be amazing. Your builds have finally made the companions useful in a way I could never have worked out myself.

I would come back and check this thread every week or so to see if there were any updates, and seeing your post about what happened was heartbreaking.

The fact that you were still working on builds, because a small group of us said we thought they were great and useful, is just... (I'm actually at a loss for words at this point).

So thank you. And please know that even if we never see another build from you, the ones we got are deeply appreciated.
