I am running a netbook with Windows 7. I am getting the following message after installation.
"The program can't start because d3dx9_42.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
Tried reinstalling - no joy. Any ideas?

Ok, can someone let me in on the "secret"? I am running Vista and I can find a file named DDRAW.dll. However, when I try to rename that file to "anything.dll" my computer says I need permission from Microsoft to change it. And I can find no way to find this permission. What am I missing? Because, like many of you, I am getting pissed off. All I want to to do is play my favorite game. I don't want to become an expert on the darn Windows operating system! I will be grateful for any advice any of you can give me.

Perludum.
I have the same problem how to correct????

rwarseck: I have Windows 7 Home Premium on one computer and Windows 7 Professional on the other. Both download PG2, files all check out, etc. But on 7 Professional, the game runs perfectly. On Home Premium, I keep getting a message that PanzerGeneral.exe has stopped working. I've tried redownloading by both GOG downloader and browser. I've even tried transferring from the machine with 7 Professional through the home network. But it still won't run. Any ideas? I've tried changing compatability, turning off NortonAV, etc. But can't get it to run on that one machine.

Any ideas?

Tried renaming my dll file - PC wont have it - I dont think I'll be back to GOG.com - not messing up my op system to play a game worth £4. Perhaps GOG rely on mugs like us not to complain and just give up - well they've relied on me for the last time....
I am not very savy with computers...where do I find this ddraw dll file?

As far as I know there should only be on ddraw.dll file in the PG2 folder. Right click it to rename it.
don't know why GOG considers the game fixed...none of the "fixes" work on my NEW COMPUTER..windows 7
I am running Win 7 Pro 64-bit

When attempting to run, after a couple screen blacks:
"PG3.exe has stopped working"
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name:PG3.exe
Fault Module Name: PG3Draw.dll

Any help?
can't launch game windows 8 and tried compatibility mode to XP version still get error game won't start
cannot download. says chunksum error on chunk33
Any new info on this? I haven't seen anything that has helped.
The solution works on win 8.1 to get the game to run, but it has a number of graphic glitches. It wont show the screen tabs correctly and it also wont display the estimated win loss ration for battles.

till needs some work GOG!
Has anybody figured out on which kind of computers this issue occurs? Does it depend on the graphics card? Works here (Haswell Intel GPU + Nvidia 7xxM series on Windows 8.1 64 bit)
This game probably won't run and you'll get a .exe error
I'm not a PC type, but I went into the game program on my computer and searched for the .dll files
Change the name of the ddraw.dll to anyhting.dll
It then works!
This issue is in no way solved no matter what anyone says. I have tried all the suggested fixes, from here and from GOG, and the game still won't run. For me the game locks up as soon as I click on the play campaign or play scenario buttons. The only thing I can do at that point is start task manager and shut down the application. Keyboard does not respond and mouse will not work in game window. Great job on this one GOG what a rip off.
