Seems that the game flickers on my configuration, I was sarching for a solution here: http://www.outcast-thegame.com/support/patchindex.htm
and they say to try to enable v-sync, only that the game DOESN'T have a v-sync feature, is forcing it on the video card panel the only viable solution?
They also say trying pressing ctrl-esc and then refocus the game window but it doesn't work at all

gklappe: I dediced to buy this game from GOG(third time i bought it :P ). And it looks and plays better then ever before(also thanks to Zenger's patch. But I also have the flickering issue and in my case it's not mouse related. I tried a bunch of stuff and it can stay away for a while, but after a while it always gets back. It does seem to be less with higher loads, but i can be mistaken.

However I couldn't remember having the problem before i started tweaking the .ini files. Does anyone knows where i can get the original back, or do i have to reinstall? (forgot to backup)

Update:
I seem to have fixed it for now,

I reinstalled outcast, but that didn't help, so i though about my virusscanner(avast) and it has an animated tray icon which now and then lights up. So I disabled the animation and the black flickering seem to be gone for now... Hope this helps anyone.

I also made a direct shortcut to load .exe and under compatibility i set it to win 98/ME and under settings I flagged disable visual themes and disable display scaling on high DPI and privilevel Run as admin.

Enjoy Adelpha!

AltMagOnline: The shortcut hint worked! Thank you soooo much! I can finally play flicker free!

UPDATE: Flicker is now randomly back :-( Grrrr....
Yesterday I had the flicker also back, but there were windows open in the background. When I had closed these the flicker was gone. Please check for any windows, programs tray icons that is animated or have moving items in anyway. It worked for me!

Update: I played yesterday for two hours straight with no crashes :D, while before Okriana crashed after a couple of minutes. I undo'd most of the .ini tweaks, and it runs much more stable. This evening I am going to try some modest .ini tweaks to get it stable while being a bit more nicer. I do have the High res patch installed and that doesn't seem to influence the stability(however i do run on only 1024 * 768).

Just tried now as soon as I loaded my PC and the flickering is gone. It is like you said, any open programs or windows cause the game to flicker, so clicking after a fresh reboot did the trick for me! Playing this way (shortcut to loader.exe) misses out the opening cutscene, so I shall just have to watch that seperately. I also have the full screen patch and it looks great. Cheers!

Great you have found a fix for yourself for the black flickering, while it is still playable it is annoying as hell! :P
I've switched from ati to a nvdia video card, and it still happens, so it certainly isn't a driver/brand issue.
Perhaps the animated icons theory is correct, but then you'd have to shut off everything including the network traffic icon and the sidebar, which would be kind of annoying.
There needs to be a better fix, if that is the case.

edit: I've tried this and it doesn't fix the flickering. The flickering only happens when using the mouse. Keyboard is fine.

Anyone got a solution to this issue when you play on Windows 7 64-bit? I can't get it to go away but I haven't tried any advanced settings yet.

I got it up and running on a VMWare with XP Pro SP3 32-bit but it's a bit slower, the screen isn't stretched out to 16:10 as I would like to and when I shoot with the pistol no ammo is fired (wtf?).

I'm desperate, I want to play this!! :(
THIS PROBLEM IS NOT SOLVED!

I tried every possible solution on this thread and no luck!

I have the black spaced out flickering that seems to happen randomly, it seems not to be related to mouse movement in my case.

My system is Windows 7 64bit, nVidia GTX 580

Any help will be appreciated, the way the game runs right now is annoying to view the screen.

Update:
If you close all windows and probably all resident programs that alter the system tray, the flickering does not happen. Annoying as hell (this workaround), but it seems to work this way.

Disabel crossfire worked for me to get rid of flickering screen.
Hello there!

Is there finally a solution for the Flickering?

I bought it yesterday, but with the flickering its just unplayable.
Everything seems to work just fine apart from that flickering thing, which is really annoying. I don't know if there is a way to reach to GOG so they can fix it. I know the game came out in 1999 and we can't ask for full support but we did buy the game...

There is a big Support button on top of the page ;-)
And i am sure, the support is reading the postings here.

This issue has not been solved But i can help!

If you are running a laptop you can use and select from the GPU or the CPU.

Now for some reason if you run the game on Integrated Graphics it will solve this issue.

This solution is meant for nvidia users.
I got the Solution for the Blackscreen ! (also Screen Flickering) (because the VSync tip did not worked because VSync is always off for me on my LCD display.)

First go to Microsoft homepage and Download "Compatibility Administator 32/64 bit"

Then open the 32-bit Version (because outcast ist 32 bit.)

then point over to Fix and Click it.

Type Vendor name, and Application name + Choose the program in the Outcast Directory (oc1 as sample, you can add oc 2, 3 later within this section)

Make your Checks on the Settings, same as seen on the Picture.
then if you are in the Last section looking for Matching files, click on the Left side, add files, (Loader.exe, oc2 and oc3.exe)

click ok, go to File and then you Save the settings first ! , and Click install !! (be sure you made install, because if you don´t do it it will have no effect xD)

(Test run, is simpy dumb idea, because if you start oc1 without load parameter it will only start credits xD)

Enjoy your Game !!

I see this topic marked as "solved" but what is now the actual fix to disable the flickering?

Thanks for tips!
