This doesn't seem to match with reviews of the game at the time of its release, or the stuff that is already posted in this thread about the video quality at least.
Those all seem to indicate the there is a slight yet noticeable improvement to the visuals in the DVD version.
Adventure Classic Gaming site even has a comparison screenshot in their review.

Sooo... the extras pictures in the DVD version are part of my imagination?

The DVD version of Riven is superior to the CD-ROM version for the following reasons:
- a few more screens here and there, that help flesh out the sense of place better (once you've seen them, you won't do without them)
- slightly higher resolution for cinematics (QuickTime movies)

Just use the DVD version.

You're wrong though. I've compared the audio data for both. CD uses .wav for a lot, DVD uses .mp2 but it's remastered for better quality.

The videos are higher quality in DVD as well.
