Rather than start a new post I thought I'd bring this one back to life....
I've just started the series and always like to start for the beginning, I've enjoyed MM1 so far (quite tough though) still lvl 1 so not been playing long. Anyway just wanted to ask as I've just started does it matter that I haven't got one of each classes in my party? I decided to go with two knights and ignored the paladin.....
In MM1 taking a second knight instead of a paladin doesn't make the party weaker. The knight gets more HP and levels faster, while the paladin gets low level cleric spells.
The main advantage of having a paladin instead of a knight is that you don't have to use magic herbs or rest when the cleric is unconscious at higher levels.
If you plan exporting your party to MM2 having two knights is no good idea, paladins get quite useful spells there.

Thanks, I might re-roll then as I plan to take the party into MM2. Not much lost as I have the 1st floor mapped ready to go.....

If you mean dying of natural old age, I actually don't know - dying of old age actually means dying because one of your stats reaches zero because of the age penalties (or maybe it's just Endurance). At that point, I think the way it works is that the character has a chance of dying every round. Theoretically, I guess you could drag them to a barrel or fountain that gives a permanent stat bonus, raise them, and have them drink to raise the weakened stat.
I wouldn't worry about that, though. Unnatural aging can be reversed, and you can take your time playing World of Xeen and still finish it in ten game years. Your characters won't reach an advanced age naturally unless you really try to make it happen.
I don't know if it's likely to happen in MM1 or 2, though.

In Might and Magic Book One, if I recall correctly, you only need to get your characters to level 13 to "beat" the game, which will leave them at 30 years old naturally since you age 1 year every time you raise your level, and if you really need to go higher, there is a location that resets everyone's age to 18....

Actually, you technically only need to be level 9, but it would be rather difficult to finish the game at that level. Level 13 is a good point to be because that's when you get the highest level spells.
I just finished Book One and my characters were level 16 or so when I finished, which makes their natural age 34. Of course, they all suffered from some unnatural aging over the course of the game. But one of the high-level spells can reverse aging, even if it is natural aging, so I was able to get everyone down to around 20 years old anyway.

I was going by the time that you got the "Astral Spell"by levelling so you wouldn't have to walk all the way to the doorway to the Astral Plane, or walk to the well that gave you all spells.
rewsan and other first time MM1 players, don't waste time mapping on paper, here is a site with all the maps. (unless you REALLY like drawing maps... I prefer to spend this time leveling up my characters)

A question to MM1 veterans: I've read contradicting information regarding fighters getting multiple attacks. Does it work the same in MM1 as it does in MM2 (and does MM2 work as in MM3 for that matter)? Do only Knights get multiple attacks in MM1? (Paladins would really suck if they didn't). In my party everyone is level 5 and so far, everyone attacks only once per round. The MM1 manual says that the knight get extra attacks at higher levels but doesn't say which level, and doesn't mention the paladin or archer getting any.

At level 8 or so, my Knight, Paladin and Archer all got 2 attacks. I think they get 3 as they level up even higher, but that didn't happen to me before I finished the game. After finishing I gained several levels and went to try one tough fight, and I think I noticed my Knight now had 3 attacks, but I wasn't really paying close attention.
There's quite a lot of leveling and loot you can find if you keep playing after finishing the game... my characters didn't nearly have the best items or anything. And there's some tough fights I couldn't win even after I'd finished the game. I wasn't personally interested in leveling up to actually beat them, but I guess it is a nice bonus for people who really want to max out their party.
I have not yet started MM2 so I don't know how multiple attacks work there.

It isn't really the drawing maps I like, but discovering where the traps and such are, the exploration of it, since there is no auto-map, and other maps show at the very least secret passageways, and usually traps and such hand-drawn is the only option for me.
As in, i don't really like drawing maps, but I don't want to know where things are.
Ok, in other words you don't want spoilers. Fair enough. :)
>>>I strongly recommend not playing without a barbarian. They're by far the best fighters in MM3-5, far stronger than knights (although an error in the manual tells otherwise).
What error in the manual are you referring to?
Question: Are Barbarians (and Ninjas) in MM2 as good as they are in MM3-5?
It shouldn't be difficult to find the error if you look at the MM3-5 manuals.
In MM2 barbarians are only about as good as knights, they get equipment restrictions and more hitpoints, but unlike in MM3-5 they don't get attacks faster.
In MM2 ninjas get more HP than robbers and the same number of attacks, I don't know how powerful their special ability is but for quest reasons I'd rather take a robber.
