I noticed it has a pretty low score compared to 1+2 (which I liked). Is it any good?
Not really, no. Not even for the sake of completing your megarace collection, whichever way you cut it.
If you loved Lance Boyle in at least one installment of the series - brace yourself for an unfunny, over-the-top caricature of him. And yes, when you do an "over-the-top caricature" of LANCE BOYLE, this is a sure sign of things going to go downhill really fast. But don't take my word for it, look it up on youTube! The videos you will see are (most likely) NOT parodies.
If you hated Lance Boyle for being an over-the-top unfunny douchebag, boy are you in for a treat! The treat is pain and empathetic shame towards Christian Erickson.
If you love racing games mixed with shmups, you might also be familiar with WipeOut. Prepare for an uninspired, tedious and boring rip-off of it. If you like shmups, well, you probably stopped caring about the franchise from MR2 onward.
All in all, i really can't recommend it for ANY conceivable reason, I'm sorry, GoG :(
Okay, thanks for explaining.
The tracks are nothing like MR2 , they are "fully 3d" , so all the amazing backgrounds are gone, at it's best, it is the same as PS1 wipeout :-(. Also, the game is much faster, and the controls are very fuzzy after you enter arcade or catastrophe mode (practice is ok, but it's booooooring).
Anyway, it's still better than MR1 I think, although I haven't played that game for years :-).
Might as well get it now when it's $2.99. I did.
Yeah, this game is horrible, I can't believe I bought it. Maybe I'll do a parody review of it sometime.
If you are brave enough to play this, do yourself a favor and turn lance's in-game commentary off.

Wow. Is it really THAT bad?

The between-race cutscenes aren't too bad, but the problem is during the races. Lance will not shut up and he says stupid things like "Vroom Vroom Baby!" and "Let's see that in slow motion!" every five seconds!

I also picked it up for $2.99 now during the promo week. I think a snickers bar would have been a better investment of that money. I'm sorry but this is the first game I've bought on GoG that really isn't all that good - heck let's just come clean and say it's shit.
The only thing I kinda like about this game are the environments, some of them are pretty cool to look at. I also like the module system, where you can switch modes. Watching the ship change shape was pretty cool.
Too bad the gameplay is lackluster. But I have played worse games than this...so yeah.
Megarace 3 was made a lot of years after the first two and by another developer, it's a piece of crap, it features gay starship looking vehicles instead of the badass cars of the previous episodes and it just look like a cheap Wipeout clone.
The best of the serie is Megarace 2 hands down, that game is awesome

yes Megarace 3 is better than MR1 and it doesn't look like a ps1 game, it was made with Renderware for PS2 and PC. It looks like an early PS2 game.
But it was a bad game for it's time and it still is, Megarace 1 at least looked amazing on my old 486 even if it was fake 3d :)

=> I totally agree. I bought the old computer version years ago to fulfill my collection and only played it once. All reviews back than weren't good

The trouble is, every time it comes out on promo, I get tempted to buy it - if just for more Lance Boyle...
Hm. I played the first game nonstop at my grandparents' house when I was a kid. I can't really remember much about it honestly (Except "Cars are people too.") but I got it from GOG as part of the pack with Iron Storm, Siberia, and Still Life so I might as well remind myself what bad taste I had as a kid.
Heck no. In terms of gameplay, Megarace 1&2 were even that great to begin with!

I bought it for the sake of having a flashback. I did. I was pleased with the 3D graphics but I was pissed at how awful the controls were in the first one. The second one looked good, but the gameplay was nothing to write home about.

Skip it.
