I was wondering what others used for Special systems. Are there any shield enhancements that that you are fond of?
I generally don't go in for shield enhancements for my builds - I do use: battle pods (always), faster engines (sometimes), inertial dampers (a lot), reinforced armor/hull (sometimes), and a few others occasionally. Much of the time my specials are designed to make the ship harder to hit by direct-fire weapons (beams and mass drivers).

My first battleship usually has a battle pod, ECM Jammer and Reinforced Hull. Like you, I rarely do anything to enhance the shields, but was wondering if anyone had a defense they were proud of.
About the only shield enhancement I ever use is "Hard Shields," though that's mostly if I figure on running into Transporters. It's rather handy inside a Nebula as well.

For the most part, the specials I tend to use are basic ones - Battle Pods, ECM, Reinforced Hull, Battle Scanners (for beam ships and scouts), Augmented Engines. I'll make use of Warp Dissipaters if I can get them (I always research Planetary Radiation Shields) - those go either on Titans or on dedicated destroyers which are otherwise equipped only with defensive systems and PD guns.

I seem to use different things for different jobs. Most of my ships Battleship and larger start with Battle Pods, ECM Jammer and Reinforced Hull. When I get more room, I add some specialties. On the Gyro battleship, I will add Augumented engines and sometimes Heavy Armor if I have it.

I use a titan for the heavy beam ship with my best beam weapon (HV). I add to the basic three the Rangemaster and the Structural Analyzer (if I have it) Later in the game, I sometimes add the high energy focus, but I don't research it.

If I am luck enough to get the Black Hole from Orion, I will add to the basic three a Subspace teleporter, Augmented engines and Heavy Armor

I forgotten, can you turn warp dissipator off on a ship that has one? or do you just have to retreat the ship? Sometimes I want the enemy to withdraw rather than fight to the bitter end.

Much of the time my defense consists of being so maneuverable and fast or with sensor jammers/cloaking that it becomes impossible to hit my ships. :) I especially like that if I have a bonus to defensive flying.

I've never tried turning it off; it's possible retreating the WD-equipped ship might be the only option.

Might have been pure coincidence, but when I tried that recently the first time ever it resulted in an instant crash.

Does anyone know if you still need a Battle Scanner with a Range Master Unit? Does the Rangemaster compliment the Scanner, or replace it?
They work along with each other, but realistically you won't need them both (and Rangemaster much less so) if you have a decent targeting computer. Battle Scanner is better imho, because it scales with the ship's Beam Attack, while Rangemaster is only good if you want to snipe enemy forces from max range, which is not always possible (and even then, the range penality is very small in MOO2, -1 per square, which is negated by even the worst computer). Also, due to dissipation effects, most beam weapons tend to do less damage as range increases, so in most cases you should want to get closer, not the other way around!
Thanks

I do employ a Titan Class ship that I use for long distrance. They sit out of range and pound the other fleets with Death Rays (HV) while other, usually smaller ships work in close. This has proven to be very effective. If I can pick up a Structural Analyzer that seems to work well with it.

How do you configure your close attacking ships for late in the game?

Usually I don't difference them too much. If the enemy civilizations do not have good shields then I just keep on using the same weapons I beat the Guardian with. Otherwise I just refit everything with Hv Death Rays and the best PD weapons available.

If there's a particular tech that I want to recover from enemy ships I also equip my fleet with Tractor Beams and heavy armor, Death Rays kill marines so I don't even have to bother with much resistance.

Thanks. Do you board opponents ships much?
Well, it's certainly more fun than blowing them up. It also allows to overcome technology disadvantages and win otherwise impossible battles. In one recent game I had quite a bad start, was falling behind in research, had only two planets, and the Psilons decided to backstab me for no reason.
My ships were no match for them (I still had tritanium armor... they had zortrium and shields) but I managed to refit my only battleship with assault shuttles before the Psilon fleet reached my homeworld. I then captured enough ships to reverse engeneer Zortrium Armor and some other goodies, and could retailate in a few turns. That was a nice comeback.
That reminds me of one piece of special equipment I use a lot - transporters (memory must be going ....). Neutron Blasters or Death Rays plus transporters are an excellent combination. It's usually faster to kill the marines and steal the ship or Starbase than to blow it up, plus there's the potential for recovering tech. Captured ships seem to draw more fire, too.
