The Spiders are making me nervous too.
Whenever I didn´t saw an attack coming I nearly made my pents wet.
The animations are really shocking.

What a great game!

falster: you too, dont be a tit, its ridiculous and completely irrational ...

kyogen: Of course it's irrational, you dolt. As Luckmann already explained to you, a phobia is an irrational fear of something. People who have real phobias know that; they just can't control the fight-or-flight response. Perhaps you're so socially maladjusted that you're incapable of empathy, but even if that's the case, parading your ignorance and rudeness here doesn't make you look all that clever. It makes you look like you need therapy.
you really think your opinion bothers me? and someone else did the whole "must only be a 12 year old" routine. nice one

you forget, it doesnt really matter to me what you think/say/or do to try and insult me or my age/intelligence. go ahead, fill your boots, its the usual trick of the armchair intellectual or sofa warrior that the internet creates (pics attached for you). like i give a toss what you say.

bless. please, feel free to try and impress us all with other insults or slights to myself or any other facet of me you "think" you might have a handle on. simply because i feel that having an irrational fear of a computer generated spider is stupid.

;) xx

As someone with snakephobia ("ophidiophobia" it seems), I feel very lucky that snakes are not a popular creature in video games. I guess they're hard to make look good in 3D. I remember the most revolting depictions of snakes were in some old 2D games where they lurked on a tree brance, all wrapped around it. Ugh. Did NOT want to go near that tree. Did NOT want to trigger an animation on it. A scene in Monkey Island 3 comes to mind, but there are other worse ones.

Still, fortunately for me, even a picture of the real thing is 10x more scary than any video game depiction I've seen. A video is again 10x worse than a picture. A rubber toy snake on the floor effectively prevents me from entering a room. Probably the most terrifying moment of my life was having one shoved in front of my face as a kid.

Seriously, phobias aren't something you can just reason away, and the feeling is much more severe than any ordinary fear, as many people have already explained. Of course, it's up to the game developers to figure out whether adding extra options for the most common phobias makes financial sense.

yrch: Simple question:

will there be any option to remove or replace the spiders/their models in this game?
As someone who has a pretty hefty arachnophobia the fact that spiders will jump right in your face alone hinders me from buying this very promising looking game.
As a person who suffered from agoraphobia for the past 34 years, the WORST thing you can do is AVOID your fears, because you never learn to NOT fear them.
Face your fear of spiders through a video game, and stop letting your phobia run your life.

That sounds harsh, but seriously, I ended up damned near house-bound because I kept avoiding leaving my home to go outside, and I only made it worse by not facing my fears.
In all fairness, you don't have to be arachnophobic for the spiders in this game to scare the crap out of you.

Once we've got our hands on some modding tools, we should be able to replace them with other stuff pretty easily.

no, they aren't. but you can fight them. you MUST fight them.

Curing a phobia is something that tends to happen gradually, slowly. I would be suprised if Floor 3 was an instant cure for arachnophobia. It might help some people but not others, and I know that sudden exposure to a phobia might well make things worse. It's stressful, too, and video games are meant to be entertainment, not stressful experiences.

Plus, I have seen people on other boards say that they haven't brought this excellent game because of said spiders, so I think it would do nothing but good for the developers to include something like the "spider slider" that they made a concept of, or for an eventual no-spiders mod to appear.

of course it takes time, but it's a fact that watching an animated spider in a videogame is much less stressful than getting a real spider thrown in your face :D so it is a good start to cure yourself...

as I said above, I am arachnophobic, but even though the mere sound of those little legs tapping behind the wall gives me creeps and I really got scared once when the spider surprised me from behind the corner, these spiders really aren't that bad.

I'd say if you actually see the spider from this game attacking you and it prevents you from playing the game because of your phobia, you should really get some professional help to get rid of the phobia. it's serious.
See, I agree with you that if it's serious enough to affect quality of life something should be done (and it is good that you are using it to help you), but I don't see why players should be made to do it for this game. If someone literally can't go outside because of a phobia of spiders then yeah, something needs to be done fast, but I don't know if I'd say the same if it doesn't.

I think it's a testament to how excellent the models are that this is even an issue. If the spiders looked cartoony or obviously unrealistic in some way like in older videogames this might not even be an issue, but they are really convincing here.

I have some friends that have arachnophobia something bad and wont purchase the game until there is a way to remove the spiders or change the graphics of them like you can do in Skyrim.

The big problem i see here though are sociopathic trolls that are probably children no less, who make fools of themselves insulting people with these phobias without any kind of understanding as to how psychology works and how some people cant help having a fear of spiders (or in general it seems).
I personally love spiders, in real life. :D

That said, perhaps they'll make a mod to replace the spiders with....evil santas. I remember Darkstone did that once...replaced all of one creature with fireball tossing santas. lol

Can't remember if this game was going to be moddable at some point? If that happens, perhaps someone else will do it someday. :)
i did it! i fought my fear an played through level 3!

i made it easier by turing down the volume, playing in window mode with smaller resolution and went forward very carefull.

i really hope they don't appear that often from now on, i want to use sound again.
next playthrough i'll try it with sound on.

if someone wants a savegame to skip lvl 3 let me know ;)

Gratuliere!

Now your party just has to get through the rest of the levels.... ;)
I haven't seen more spiders, but I ran into some nasty walking fungus and later a couple of giant crabs that gave my party a good thrashing until I figured out how to deal with them. I'm only in the middle of the game, though.

Luckmann: After this game, I think I've developed a far worse phobia.

An irrational fear of sentient fungus.
ohh no the horror!!!! fungus is bad enough.. but these new smarter fungus are down right scarry!

I could see children everywhere running from a giant sized picture of those walking fungus..

*shivers..
