My two pence:

FPS is my favourite genre (from Wolfenstein to Battlefield), and this game is great.

Yes, the first level is horribly unbalanced, and liable to put you off. It's far too hard, unforgiving and frustrating. Yes, it's largely brown. Yes, there isn't much of a plot.

However.

Because you spend your first twenty minutes getting turned into gibs, the satisfaction you feel when you tear into the same gangsters who have previously help you back is intense. Especially with a shotgun. After the first level, the difficulty levels-out sensibly, and the dank and oppresive atmosphere - helped along by Good Ol' Cypress Hill - is a brilliant catalyst for stress-relief when you finally get ahold of some serious firepower.

It's not up there with Half-Life or Doom, but then, what is?
